Mold or mildew in tort table

I recently cleaned my redfoot tortoise cage and was shocked to see some areas that had black growth (I'm not really sure if it was mold, mildew, etc). Some parts of the cage were pretty bad and the mold had actually grown through the wood and was visible on the bottom outside. I have since then...

    Potential RT health issue (MBD)

RE: Potential RT health issue That definitely looks like MBD. Unfortunately his bones may be softening. By the looks of it he may have a spine deformation from the condition as well. How long has he looked like that? Get him on a more varied diet because lettuce and radicchio just doesn't...

Help me with my tort table

Go to a hardware store and buy some plastic liner. I got 50 feet and it was only $8. It's completely water proof and you can cut it to any size.

    Terracotta dishes

My redfoot is getting too big for her water dish. I have heard that a lot of people just use a terracotta dish but where do you buy one?

Red footed tortoise not eating greens.

I found that chopping the food up really tiny( so they can't pick through it) and mixing it with something they like like fruit will help "wean" them back onto greens. My tortoise used to be really picky until I started doing this. Now she will eat pretty much anything.

Say a prayer for the red & yellow foots

RE: Say a prayer for the red & yellow foots I also admit to eating beef, pork, etc, which are all animals that I love! I think that if you grow up in a family that eats lots of meat it is hard to cut it out of your life completely. For some reason though I hate the thought of tortoises being...

Is it safe to put outside rocks/logs into my indoor habitat?

I went to the river and found some cool looking drift wood. At Petco or another store I have seen smaller pieces of wood that cost about 20$ what a waste! It's totally safe as long as you spray them down with hot water in the sink. Here is a picture of a hide that I made out wood. [hr]

how to get him to eat?

In order to get him to eat his food try giving him some fruit. Get some yummy fruit and some greens and mince it all together so the pieces are tiny. He may not like the size of the food, or like most babies he may just be picky. This is a great way to "wean" a tortoise onto a food that they are...

RE: Strange "cracks" between scutes PLEASE HELP I do usually offer cuttlebone but I need to buy some more because they actually go through a pack pretty quick. I offer a vitamin d3 + calcium supplement once a week. Here is my feeding schedule. Monday: fruit with greens Wednesday: protein...

Strange "cracks" between scutes PLEASE HELP

Lately I have noticed that my red foot Sobe has had a dry shell. The dryness only occurs between the scutes, not on the bottom of the shell. She has had a bumpy shell since I purchased her from Petco. She now has what looks like crevices between her scutes and I worried that she may have MBD or...

    Zoomed enclosure

I bought two of these enclosures and attached them together and it gives my two red foots plenty of space. I agree there are a lot of manufacturing issues with these sometimes, but I lucked out and didn't have any problems.

    Best Tortoise Light Fixtures

I have 2 Red foot tortoises and have been trying to increase temperatures. What type of light fixture do you think distributes heat the best? I have noticed that some people use strip lights but I have always used domed lamps. I do cover up half of my enclosure but it is not shown in the...

    Eating droppings

My torts absolutely love dog poop. They are red foots so they probably like the dog food taste or something. Trust me I try not to let them do it but sometimes they find a little chunk in the yard somewhere. They hunt for it like its tortoise crack. Nasty, but I've had them for about 4 years now...

    Does tort has memory? Personality?

Before feeding my torts I always mist the cage. My torts now think that heavy misting means it feeding time and they always seem to get really excited. One of my torts always gets really excited when I baby talk to her and she will literally run over to me to see if its time for food. My torts...
