    Seed Mix

I was told that Russians wouldn't be likely to eat grasses or hay but when my grandson threw some Timothy hay to my Russians they chowed on it like it was candy?! And they already had their greens in there!

    Black face

I have one with a dark face and big eyes and another with a lighter color to his face and smaller eyes. Dark face=Boris, light face=Sergei. They look just different enough to tell them apart without marking their shells. My vet said it was like anything else. They have their differences.

    Store bought plant safe?

This has been a struggle for me as well. As suggested, I even got on line and looked for "organic house plants". When they came, they were just as full of the white fertilizer balls as the non-organic "Home Depot" plants I bought before. So, I rinse all of the dirt off of them and replant them...

    Soaks?

I live in AZ and my tortoises are outside. I soak them a lot! I never really see the Russians go into their water on their own like my Sulcatas or Desert torts, and it made me nervous so I make sure they get soaked. They seem to like it anyway. I even float a little food and flowers in the...

    russian tortoise

I have two Russians but I'm still new to this species. This forum is the place to be though! They are characters for sure and the escape artist part is a biggie when you design the enclosure! I am amazed at their ability to climb corners!!! And they are smart enough to keep looking just in case...

    Cuttlebone question

When I first put the cuttlebone in the habitats both my Sulcatas and my Russian chomped all over them for the first day or two. Then they walked away from it for a while and went back to them much later. I replace them when they disappear or get grossly dirty. They haven't really swarmed them...

    A new guy.

Hi. I have a couple of Russians too but they are new to me also. Good news is that if its info you need, this is where to get it! Basically these guys are not supposed to get much fruit at all. An occasional celebratory berry or apple chunk is about it I think so don't give him that on a daily...

I had "one"once! Now I have 9! (And two box turtles). As was previously stated, they're like chips. You will love this site. Anything you need to know, somebody on here knows already and will gladly share.

    Planting edibles.

Thanks Tom for the links, I will be sure to check them out! I have spineless cactus pads growing all over my yard. I'll have to see if its the same I suppose and you said Mulberry. My son has a huge "fruitless mulberry" tree in his yard. Is this the mulberry you mean? Thank you for clarifying...

    TORTOISE MEATBALLS

Little ones don't eat hay? Oh darn. Don't tell my little ones. I don't think they knew that😃

    Planting edibles.

He he he, Cowboy, I don't typically ask Home Depot employees advice about anything. I surely wouldn't ask them about a tortoise. I save those questions for Petsmart :-) (just kidding!) I was just reading the tags on the plants that I was told were supposed to be edible and they all said they...

    Planting edibles.

I have Russians, Sulcatas and Desert tortoises. Being in AZ makes the Desert's habitat planting relatively easy except for the "fun" stuff. I am trying to plant edible things in the other two outdoor, table type habitats. I have them in tables because of size. Anyway, I went to Home Depot to buy...

    Sheldon is a Shelly

According to the book I just read on Russians(E.J. Pirog) unlike most tortoise species both Male and Female have a flat plastron and are equally round. The tail of the female is much shorter and thinner whereas the male has a much thicker longer tail. The Russian males don't develop the concave...

Do Russians have a lot of salmonella?

My understanding is that you can get salmonella from handling anything reptile or remotely close. Keep them clean, keep their enclosure clean, and wash your hands after handling. Also, you probably shouldn't lick the tortoise;-).

    A good ramp

I used grip tape from the skate shop because it sticks really well. Then I spaced out craft sticks on top of that and sprinkled it with tiny gravel and dirt. The torts never slide down (even my crippled Sulcata could make it up and down) and it keeps their claws perfectly trimmed.

Help needed please (buy from petshop?)

RE: Help needed please One of my Russians came from Petsmart, the other is from a Rescue. I agree that I wish Petsmart wouldn't sell them but also think its ok to buy them because I sure hate to see them left there! A tort leaving Petsmart has a much better chance than a tort staying...

    Those pesky teenager law breakers!

Totally funny post! I have photos of mine driving the Tonka trucks one afternoon while my kiddos were watching them in the sun. Oddly they seem to like the attention!
