    Gender Guess ?

Thank you for your replies, Tom and Yvonne! @Tom: Thank you for your advice! They have their own enclosure so they don't live as a pair. ;) The sand is not the only substrate I've used. There is also a part of the enclosure filled with coco coir and the area where they use to eat has been...

    Hi there, Just curious if my tortoises are already big enough to tell their gender. What do you think guys? I have measured them, and their carapaces were about 9 inches long. First one; And the second;

    Time Lapse Sulcata

Hi Tom, About the Solar Raptor brand, I've compared some testing results and this was by far the best one. Where I come from it is considered the best available UVB lighting at the moment. (well, natural sunlight is of course always better :P) I do not have an UV meter so I can only believe...

    Time Lapse Sulcata

Hi Tom, The basking lamp is a Solar Raptor 70W HQI spot. Basking temp is 95F. The ambient temp is around 70-77F. Temperature in the burrow is 77F at daytime, and 73F during the night. I can't wait to see your results!

    Eating rocks

I thought I had heard that Sulcatas (in nature) sometimes eat small stones. The stones offer some help to grind their food in the stomach. I'm not sure if this is a true story... However, I do know ostriches use this technique.

    Time Lapse Sulcata

Hi there, I've just made a time lapse video of my Sulcata tortoise's behavior. Five hours of footage were speeded up 64x times! The result is a 4min time lapse video. In the upper left you can see the record time. I used a Foscam IP Camera (FI9831W) for recording it. You can watch it...

    Enclosure decor

You can make your own rocks. It is much cheaper and you can make everything you want :-) Look what I have made; http://www.tortoiseforum.org/thread-88108.html (I used styrofoam and tile cement) Tutorial: http://www.lizard-landscapes.com/reptile-terrarium.html

It has been a long time since the last update. I almost forgot to post more pictures, but here are some more. Tim is now for about a week in his new enclosure, and he is doing fine. :) The humid area: (on the picture it looks quite dry however, in real it is really humid. ;))

Thank you! As paint I used graffiti spray cans. See the picture below. The rocks I made before this ones were also covered with matt lacquer. However, I didn't think it was necessary, so this time i have not used any lacquer. Please notice that the vapors of the spray cans are toxic. So you...

Another Sulcata Enclosure (lots of pics!)

Due to the strength of the tile cement I could easily move the pieces into the enclosure. :) I'm so happy! I just received two packages with tortoise goodies :D. On the first picture can you see a Raptor Solar UVB light blub. This HID-lamp has a high UVB output, which is very important for...

Another Sulcata Enclosure (lots of pics!)

The enclosure so far. I use special clay-sand for his substrate, so he can burrow holes. The whole right part near the rocks will be grass, so he don't get sand in his mouth while eating. Clay-sand, it is a bit like loam. Now I have to wait until the seeded grass comes up. When the UV...

Another Sulcata Enclosure (lots of pics!)

Never mind! I think it is a good thing if people are thinking along. ;) Yes, tile cement works well. Use the powder-version. This time I smeared six layers on it. The first layer was as thin as pancake batter. The other layers were thicker. You can even put sand on the last layer to give it...
