I live in Cyprus where I have a female Greek spur thighed tortoise which was found as a stray, wandering down the road. she lives in an outside run, all year round. I have 2 males who are very attentive and very active courting and mating with her! I’ve had her since 2013 but I have no idea how...
I did give her antibiotic eyedrops 3 times a day for about 2 weeks and it seemed to have cleared up but today I realised that I hadnt seen her for a few days and when i dug her out of her hidey hole I found her eyes are white again.
Thanks Yvonne - I'll see what I can find. I have had a vet recommended as one who knows a bit about tortoises so I'm going to give him a ring and hope he speaks English!
I've uploaded a photo just so you can see something of their enclosure about 4m long and 2m wide) with 3 tortoises. The poorly one is the large of the 3
i have a Greek spur thighed tortoise I believe to be about 8-9 years old by her size. She lives permanently in a large outdoor enclosure in Cyprus with 2 other tortoises. I've had her about 3 years now after she was found as a stray walking down the road! I don't get into all the substrate...
Thanks everyone! Miss Polly has been very active since she went in there which I'm hoping is because she likes it. Today I'll buy her a terracotta hide and I was thinking of getting a couple of turfs.
I have tried to create a nice garden feature that also happens to have a tortoise in it. my husband built the wall for me although I wasn't expecting anything quite so substantial!
Steel reinforced foundations, concrete going in
Block wall
The wall being rendered - it will be spritzed to...
Yeah that's what I thought which is why I asked in USA if they would allow it! Joes Mum, I often travel to and fro UK. I could easily put pads in my suitcase and post them if you'd like
Thanks BeeBee. Prickly pears are in plentiful supply in Cyprus growing everywhere so its easy to feed her that. 1 pad seems to last ages in the fridge. She likes the flowers too.
Thanks Joe's mum! I've already been giving her a couple of the strawberry tops which she likes and she likes prickly pear (pad and flower but she didn't eat the fruit). I've found a prickly pear that seems to have soft spines so I don't end up spending so long picking spines out of my fingers...
I can't buy dandelion or clover in cyprus and at this time of year the weeds are all dead! I'm trying to identify the salad greens that are for sale in Cypriot grocers but they only know the Greek name for the leaf! My husband is building her an enclosure as we speak and then I will grow stuff...
I'm new to owning a tortoise and have been given a fairly large, female Greek that was found in the road by a friend. She seems to come out of her shelter about twice a day to eat then returns to her shelter again. Should she be more active than that? How much should I be feeding her (once a day...
Well Miss Polly, as she seems to be called, certainly has a good appetite and tucks into everything offered - prickly pear, spinach, lambs foot salad, caper flowers, hibiscus flowers, cucumber, apricot, strawberries, figs,(I only give one little piece of fruit each meal) and spinach. So far the...
Thanks, Yvonne. I've spent hours pouring over the tortoise table database which is how I identified the ones that I've named. The others I just can't find and hoped to be able to feed the tortoise from local plants. Tortoises are found wild here on rare occasions so I just have to work out what...
