I have a huge brown turkey fig tree. Like some of the other posters, I have noted that our RF does not like to eat the leaves, but will find every little morsel of fig fruit and literally gorge on it!
Well, so far so good! Gnatrol has completely eliminated my fungus gnat problem in my indoor enclosure after a 3-time weekly application drench to the substrate (2 tsp to 1 gal distilled water). My tortoise seems as happy and normal as ever.
No more gnats!!
Thanks. I posted the question to ask if anyone had any experience with Gnatrol in tortoise enclosures. When I read about it, it seemed to be a very "organic" way to control fungus gnats but wasn't sure if it would be safe around my tortoise. Supposedly, it is a "biological control" containing...
I have recently had problems with fungus gnats breeding in our indoor redfoot enclosure. The moist orchid bark substrate just proliferates them and they spread into the house. I switched to a mixture of 3/4 cypress mulch, 1/4 orchid bark and have ordered some gnatrol (BTi-WDG) to try and...
Our redfoot tortoise was grazing in our yard under the fig tree and I caught her eating some unknown wildlife scat, most likely from a raccoon or a coyote. Should I be concerned? Go to the vet for a fecal right away or.....?
Just wondering if other keepers may notice it.
Our adult redfoot, Bubbles, sometimes sits and stares at the TV screen for hours while in her enclosure. Maybe it's the lights flashing or.....?
Bubbles is a very sociable tortoise, btw. :tort:
I was told by my vet that if we used anything on the shell, to use mineral oil, and that it was strictly cosmetic.
I personally think it helps to retain moisture, so we do it about once a month.
Like you say, you're on the gulf coast---very humid there so outside wouldn't be such a problem as would be here. Where we live the most humidity we get is about 60-70% and that is considered high!
Those pictures were taken just after completion and before the substrate was thoroughly moistened. I intend to install plastic plants also. Bubbles gets weekly soaks in the laundry sink and gets taken outside occasionally on hot days in an enclosed planter box area in our back yard, but the...
Well, I finally got around to spend 3 days creating a new indoor enclosure for our mature red foot tortoise, Bubbles. She was previously in a 40 gallon tank which was getting too small for her mature size. I customized our old coffee table into an enclosure! There are two 10.0 UVB fixtures on...
No disrespect intended! And, btw, I have no way of knowing who knows what on this forum; thanks for letting me know...LOUD AND CLEAR.
I did google it and found a great experiment done in the UK, if anyone else wants to learn about the subject...
Thank you. I don't mean to be impertinent but did you obtain this information from a reliable source? I would like to read further on the subject and a citation would be appreciated :shy:.
I read somewhere that rays from a UVB lamp are affected when directed through a screen. Is this so? What about the type of screen material used? Perhaps the type used on screened doors (also the type used on terrariums designed for reptiles) are not metal screens, but a type of tough plastic...
My wife wants to know....;)
Bubbles seems to be wagging her tail alot and wants to know if it has anything to do with emotion!
....let the commentary begin!
Thanks for the tips. As far as the 40 gallon tank, that's as big as we're going to go indoors, unfortunately. I do have plans for a great outdoor habitat that is MUCH larger, inside a raised hardscape planter area in our yard. Hopefully, we can keep her outside perhaps 4-5 months of the year...
