Hi,
I just recently got these guys -- maybe a month ago. I'd like to keep them but I found out I'm leaving the country for over a month in December and don't really have any viable options to keep these guys safe and happy.
These are in the 4-5" range and have a very small amount of...
Hi, I've completed my enclosure and am wondering the best way to mount ceramic heat emitters in a way that they wont be a fire hazard or get ruined. With my sulcata he has a huge house so its no problem, we mount them inside, but this juvenile redfoot enclosure has a much smaller hide. Any ideas?
I suppose that is the best option. I was really looking forward to having them graze on all the grasses we have growing there! From my reading, the highest concentrations of lead absorbed by plants is in the leaves and stalks, so probably best to avoid that...
Thanks all

Tom, i've built a 10' x 5' 12" walled solid wood fence around an area in my small (and narrow - hence the specs) yard. Within that there is a smaller sleeping enclosure which is contained as yours are. I was just wondering if anyone had tips to avoid warping, and my thought was that painting...
Sorry if that was a poor choice of adjectives but thats the texture I mean (I would consider toothpaste to have a somewhat chalky texture, as I would the photo on the urates page).
In either case, not really mucous-like
Thanks for all the tips. I live in new orleans so cold isnt really an issue, but humidity is.
By enclosure I guess meant sort of a pen, i definitely wouldnt paint the inside of the hide box/house. What I meant to ask was about painting the inside walls of the tortoise pen.
Does anyone have experience in building outdoor enclosures in polluted areas? I'm building one now and it just hit me that because of the flooding in this area during Katrina, the lead levels in the soil are very high in many places. For that reason they often recommend that gardens be built as...
That doesn't really look like urates, I'd get it checked out or hopefully someone on here can answer, but urates are typically more chalky in my experience than mucous-like.
Tom -- does that help with warping? Do you use pine or another hardwood?

Just read a lot of old posts about this...I think I got the gist of it but any other ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks

The home depot near me is going out of business and there are some crazy sales on lumber just in time for me to build an outdoor enclosure for my two new redfoots. I know that pine tends to warp and or rot in humid environments, but I also have a lot of spare exterior house paint around. Im...
Great thanks all. A lot of the care sheets and research I've read is either not very detailed about adult humidity or states that hatchlings and juveniles should be raised with high humidity but that humid conditions with adults can cause respiratory issues, etc.
Thanks for clearing this up --...
Hi,
I've successfully kept sulcatas, redfoots, yellowfoots and cherryheads but I'm starting to investigate keeping leopard tortoises. The only thing is, I just moved to New Orleans where the relative humidity is very high -- so it's great for the south american species but perhaps not so much...
I know this isnt tortoise related so I wasnt sure exactly where to post it, but I was out kayaking this morning on the coast of NC and found this little guy passed away. I've reported him as stranded and they're coming to get him. Hate to see it, but hopefully he can e useful in research!
Will! Absolutely, thats why Im getting out of other herps and keeping tortoises. Its basically tropical here, so I've got plans for redfoots and more

Oops! I misread, but yes its true!
Sorry for all the posts, really cruising craigslist tonight and this is a great deal on what looks to be a healthy tortoise!

It could be worse...at first I thought the tortoise shell hide was the size of the actual animal. That bedding has got to be causing some problems, right?
