    Wooden box or glass terrarium?

I started with my first redfoot in a Tortoise House. One thing I can say is that if you're maintaining proper humidity, the wood will be warped, cracked, and moldy within a couple of years. If it's still in good shape, and you can temporarily rehouse your tort, I'd consider painting the interior...

    Banana Day!

Bananas are ok for an occasional treat, I've never experienced any diarrhea with them. I feed then rarely because the torts love them so much. They have a bad calcium/phosphorus ratio though, so they're like junk food for torts.

Hygrometers: They're accurate, and why they're not

I found this gem in an Amazon.com review, and thought it was worth sharing. This was for a digital hygrometer costing less than $20: I laugh when I read reviews stating that a particular hygrometer is "accurate" or "not accurate." I know these reviewers can not really tell one way or the...

New England Reptile Expo, Manchester NH, Jan 26 2014

http://reptileexpo.com/nefirst.htm The last expo wasn't very heavy on tortoises, but there are lots of snakes and geckos. I got a five pound bag of Mazuri last time for 12 dollars and a MVB for $10 less than the pet stores.

    Redfoot size to age correlation

Maybe you can take a shot at it, then. The tort in the middle is Shelly. I've had her for two years, and she's currently about 7" SCL. The one on the left is Sherman, and she's about 7.75". I've had her for six months. Littlefoot is on the right, measuring in at about 4.5". He's been with me for...

    Redfoot size to age correlation

I have three redfooted tortoises that I purchased from pet stores. They were purchased at different times and were different sizes when I bought them. I don't know how old they are, but I would like to. Are there any charts that depict typical growth rates relative to age for redfoots? Any...

    Dobby - Constipation

One of my redfoots has been constipated lately. I wonder if she isn't getting enough water, even though it's always available and accessible. I gave her a warm soak yesterday, and she started struggling to have a BM. After some time, she was able to get just a little bit out. I then picked her...

    Redfoots in New Hampshire

Hello! I live in southern New Hampshire with my wife, three redfooted tortoises, and numerous other reptiles. My three redfoots are Sherman (8" SCL), Shelly (7" SCL), and Littlefoot (4.5" SCL). The two larger are female, and I can only guess that Littlefoot is a girl as well. They live in their...

    What paint for wooden enclosure?

I used polyurethane. I used some attractive plywood and didn't want to hide it, and the polyurethane is durable against the humidity my redfoots require. I put a few coats of lacquer on the exterior. For the floor of the enclosure, I sprayed the base with that spray rubber stuff you see...
