You usually hear the general rule of a pile of greens "the size of the tort's shell" for how much to feed-- I don't think it really matters if you dump that all in at once, or do half as much for two feedings. If I was around everyday to do it in two feedings, I would rather do that just...
Last fall, I figured if it was too cold for me to go out and lay on the ground in shorts and a t-shirt somewhat comfortably, it was probably too cold for my Russian tort. I have no clue how accurate that is, but it's what I went by, anyway! (I know-- I'm anxious, too-- We just got more snow...
As another $$ saver-- check on Amazon, too, for supplies. If you can work out getting free shipping, a lot of the stuff is cheaper on there than you can find in pet stores (at least in my area)
I've been looking at his feet and I think what makes his toes look like toes is the claw coming out of it (on his normal feet)- they don't have toes like we do or say a cat or dog or bird have... So when his claws were gone (for whatever reason), it looked like his toes were. Now that the claw...
You may want to nix the broccoli, green beans, and carrots and feed more dark leafy greens (weeds, if you have them...)
Do a search of the forum on what to feed a Russian-- but to get you started-- the answer will be mostly leaves, not veg. If you are depending on store bought due to the...
Well, I'm pretty excited and no one around here (at home) is thinking this is a big deal, but I do!
I was taking Wilson out of his soak today and I think he has a claw trying to grow on his "elephant foot" (The foot that appeared to have lost all its toes.)
When I first got him, he was...
I wonder about temps, too. I always went by "baby bath water" temp... I think that would be at the higher end of your range, but still in range. But after months of doing this and going a little cooler, a little warmer, I've pretty much concluded Wilson just doesn't enjoy water much. No...
Poor killer! He can't get a thermal break!
Haha. Glad you both made it through and the heat is back...
Now if we could only get the temps outside up a bit...
Cheers!
If you do the one with the plexiglass, you might want to leave a wood border on the bottom that comes up a little higher so the tort can't see out as easily. They don't get glass and will just continue to try to stubbornly walk through it. Bonk Bonk Bonk.
If you google 'tortoise enclosures'...
I think it's good youre taking him to the vet.
At first, I thought, like you, that it sounded possibly like respiratory, but I'm wondering if he could have some sort of a blockage (either something he ate but shouldn't have, or a stone)...
Regardless, keeping him warm and doing the soaks can't...
Maybe it's kind of like when people get sick-- sometimes that drainage (nasal) comes on when you're actually starting to feel better...
I hope so.
Eating is always a good sign, though. Keep us updated!
I can see the reflection of the tort in the glass, I'm sure he can! Can you get some of that plastic surround they use for fish tanks or reptile tanks and put it in there? (Or get it out of the glass and into something with plastic or wood walls? Glass, even without reflection, isn't always...
Your points are good and well taken.
Unfortunately, it seems that as some animals become common (that is, more successfully bred), they become less popular with some people. (Or is it that as more breeders rush to meet the demand, the supply suddenly balloons larger than existing demand?) I...
