I was having problems with my Greek when I moved him to a new enclosure and hadn’t wet down the base layer of his substrate. I wet it and pack it down and it gives him great footing. He was flipping 6-8 times a day but now he’s flipped once in three weeks.
How deep is his substrate? And if it’s dry, wet it and tamp it down and it will provide better footing for him. My Greek was flipping constantly when I put him in a new enclosure. Turned out that his substrate was too dry and too shallow and not packed down a bit.
Please get him to a vet. An URI that has progressed to swollen eyes, running nose is an emergency. If not treated it will likely move to his lungs and cause pneumonia. He likely NEEDS antibiotics. I don’t think anything other than antibiotics and great supportive care (temps/humidity, soaking...
I would call the vet back and stress to them that this is an emergency. Sometimes the receptionists won’t hear the seriousness in a client’s voice so just makes appointments for the next slot available. Hoping that they will see your guy sooner.
My Hermann’s has a nose whistle. He only does it when he sees me or if someone new comes in the house and he’s trying to smell them. Oh, also if we are preparing or eating food. I took him to my vet (a herpetology vet) and he was extremely concerned until he found nothing on exam or tests. We...
Please take him to a good vet. A vet who is experienced in tortoises would be ideal. He IS sick and it will not go away on its own. If it progresses into pneumonia it will be difficult to save his life.
He is definitely sick. That sounds like uri and his eyes look swollen as well.
Does he have a basking spot. He should have an spot that is about 100 - 110 Fahrenheit. 80-85 is fine for the rest of the enclosure. Keeping the heat up to 85 at night is good for a sick tortoise but after he’s been...
I think that the vet is right. Most vets don’t have the energy to continue to try to convince people that their pets are overweight because so many owners don’t agree for some reason. Tortoises shouldn’t have fat pads. What is growing in your yard? Weeds and flowers or grass? And do you know...
I just saw the pictures you posted when you first got him. His eyes look very swollen in those pictures. Did he get treated with antibiotics or anything and did the eyes go back to looking normal? If not then it’s likely the same infection and it has progressed to a runny nose. Next will be lung...
My tortoise had a runny nose, even less obvious than yours and it turned out to be an infection. I think that they just get sicker and sicker if not treated with antibiotics. My vet said it’s imperative to catch it as early as possible before it gets to the lungs. I would absolutely not hesitate...
I could be wrong but his shell development makes me think that he’s a wild caught tortoise. If so, he’s been through a LOT. Huge changes, illness, possibly parasites. And it’s likely that he will only eat what he grew up eating in the wild.
I have what my vet thinks is a wild caught eastern...
