Yvonne the single one is awesome! I have come across quite a number of abberations but this is the most interesting one that I have ever seen. Are the two in the first pic from the same female?

    Interesting experiences with Leopard tortoises

Good luck with your experiments. I just suspect that there is one problem that you may encounter with artificial incubation and I hope I will be able to describe it sensibly. When my females lay their eggs they stomp the soil down very tightly. In the egg the young ones are formed in a rounded...

    Interesting experiences with Leopard tortoises

Tom, What a lovely collection. Are these all your hatchlings and how many hatchlings were there in total - ie more or less what percentage are these of the total? I notice that they are all fairly dark. This little one took it to the extreme. Do you have any experience with hypomelanistic...

    Interesting experiences with Leopard tortoises

Just to explain what I mean by aberrant - a normal leopard tortoise has 13 main scutes. 5 across the back and 4 on each side. For ease of reference I number them 1 to 5 across the back, 6 to 9 on the left side and 10 to 13 on the right side numbering from the head side to the tail and viewing...

Meet my new baby Leopard SPP

Hope everyone is not going to come down on me like a ton of bricks again when I am just trying to provide accurate data. Just to establish my credentials, I had my first pp more than 50 years ago and have been "breeding" them for probably the past decade.a la natural meaning that the females lay...

    Help! Sick tortoise

Cheryl may I suggest that you read my placement with care again. I stated that the dad was the size of the baby when I started raising him. The mom was donated to me when she grew to large to be handled by her previous owner so I am not responsible for her looks. I would like to add further...

    Help! Sick tortoise

PS If you are worried about dehydration include a portion of grated English cucumber in their food (not too much it must not be their total food intake) - they love it and it provides natural moisture similar to the succulents and other fleshy plants that they thrive on in the wild.

    Help! Sick tortoise

Ben02 - Who soaks them in nature in their natural habitat where day temperatures can be in the 90s for days on end with no rain for more than a month? if their cage/ enclosure is not overheated and they have access to drinking water it should suffice. The cage should never be too humid as this...

    My Sulcata eats dog poop!

In nature this is how tortoises obtain, amongst other things, calcium. There is always the possibility that the poo will contain undesriable items, bacteria, eggs of internal parasites and similar nasties but ii is just some of the hazards that tortoises face in nature.

    Help! Sick tortoise

Can someone please enlighten me as to why one has to soak a leopard tortoise? What is the purpose of this soaking? Anyhow a temperature of 100 is extremely high for a leopard tortoise considering that incubating temperature is only in the region of 80. Being cold blooded they cannot regulate...
