    Nominate or Subspecies...Help?

Fair enough. If it helps, I'm from South Texas. But, I've nonclue where the original owners got their former pets from, although I believe that the youngest in my collection may have been wild caught.

    Nominate or Subspecies...Help?

South Texas. Specifically, San Antonio is where I live. Where the original owners obtained their former pets, I couldn't tell you. For all I know, they could be wildcaught, and not captive bred.

    Nominate or Subspecies...Help?

I'm in need of some help in identifying 3 of my 4 bodies. Adopted a male Three toed last year from an elderly man who didn't have time for him. But this is about my 3 females. I know for a fact that they're Ornates. Only issue is, not sure if they're T.o. ornate, or T.o. luteola. Anyone wanna...

Is My Spotted Turtle Boy Or Girl?

To be honest, I got "her" at an expo around two years ago from a breeder that lives in Seguin, Texas. But the guy who sold her to me was relatively new and told me that he was a she. He kept all of his animals outdoors as am I. So your guess on my spotted being around that age group sounds about...

Is My Spotted Turtle Boy Or Girl?

Apologies, but I really need to be sure about this. Could anyone tell me if my little Spotted female is truly a female? I noticed some thickening in the tail, but it could be just my imagination. I need someone to help explain it to me, as well as the true characteristics of adult males and...

    Which Russian Subspecies??

Nice looking tortoise! I keep a ratio of 1:5 and they live outdoors mostly as the weather is favorable. I, too, am hoping to breed my own little herd one day. For now, I'm just enjoying them.

    Weird Lower Jaw

Funny, I caught her basking alongside my female Spotted. She's been in the same spot for awhile and I suspect that she never got what she needed. She looked very content and bright eyed. Her sorry state of living I can gladly say has come to an end, and I intend to give her a much more enriching...

    Weird Lower Jaw

I was told of her care and it makes semse- lack of ANY UVB (just a walmart brand heat bulb no real access to sun), mostly a water habitat with very little land area in a 10 gallon tank, and a very improper diet. But also, she was owned by another before them so I cant say for sure how she truly...

    Weird Lower Jaw

Thanks for that, and funny enough you responded after I came across the term "duck beak" and was hoping to have this confirmed by more experienced keepers. In any case, still trying to find a local specialist vet where I'm from. Plus need to get some more dewormer for my tortoises.

    Tortoise Box Works!!

This is EXACTLY the kind of info I need! Learning from mistakes and preventing future ones. Thanks for the source, I've already read it thru but will go over it again repeatedly and try to break it down more easily for my sake. Sorry, not so good with words or talking to others as I'm on the...

    Weird Lower Jaw

The top beak is overgrown for sure. If it wasn't for the bottom part, having her beak trimmed with certain foods would make it super easy like I do with my tortoises. How that bottom part got like that I have no clue. Hence she was given to me suddenly today. But yes, I am hopeful that she will...

    Tortoise Box Works!!

Don't reckon I've ever built one before. But I do like how they look for larger tortoises on Kamp Kenan's channel. If I tried something like that but halfway in the ground, it'd have to be a heat pat screwed on the ceiling part or something. In any case, I love hearing new ideas if it'll help...

    Tortoise Box Works!!

Many moons ago, I once posted (twice accidentally and unknowingly) about how to keep my trio of Russian tortoises outdoors all year round with a hide box that they can all retreat to to escape extreme heat and cold as well as making it flood proof. Well, folks, I have finally got my answer going...

    Weird Lower Jaw

A friends' box turtle has a big issue- her lower jaw appears to be flat or underground. Or it could be some sort of deformity, aside from the edges of her shell curved up all around. I'm on my way to find a vet that specializes in reptiles. Till then, anyone have any ideas on what it could...

    Spotted turtle hibernation length?

The thing is my male has been very active last year. Matter of fact, the breeder I got him from lives in Seguin less than an hour away from me where he has kept his colony outdoors all year. The female I got from him a year ago is highly active as mentioned before. The male Ive had for 3 years...
