Update: as of this past Wednesday, our tortoises have now been rehomed.
Moderators, please feel free to close this thread at your convenience. Thank you.
We are re-homing them free to the right person. Ideally, we'd like someone who can assure us they'll take proper care of them. The adoptee would be responsible for any transport costs.
My wife Sylvia and I raised two male sulcata tortoises from hatchlings in 2011. They are both now fully grown and weigh probably over 200 pounds.
We're not able to manage caring for them any longer, and would like to find them a good home. We live in the Northwest Florida panhandle (Fort...
Here's a recent photo of Mr. George soaking up the sun on an otherwise cool day. As you can see, he just loves to bask in the sun.
And here's one of him (taken just yesterday) munching on some freshly planted rye grass.
One of our male sulcatas seems to get upset when I don't feed him every day. Usually he'll do something like try to walk all over the food tray and refuse to eat when I try to feed him after Sibi has been feeding him for a few days. After a few tries, he eventually does eat, but I interpret...
Here are a couple of photos of her new and improved wall. There's pretty much no way for her to wedge herself between the wall and tree like she did before in order to knock the wall down. After her ordeal, Baby Runt is actually pretty much afraid of this section of her pen, and she's only now...
Sibi and I just doubled one of the cinder block walls for one of our Sulcata's pens. The wall used to be one block thick and two blocks high, but it was leaning in places. (The tortoise in question knocked the top block over, climbed over the lower block and went on a rampage.). So we doubled...
There's a story behind my "Michigan Frog" handle. It's taken from the Looney Tunes character, and I don't think I've ever actually been to Michigan. (I wouldn't mind going someday if I have the chance). Sibi and I are here in the Gulf coast of Florida.
Sorry, yes, I did post to your thread. Not trying to hijack it or anything like that... Honey Boy doesn't have his own thread yet, but he probably should. :P
I don't know that I'd call either of our torts obese, but I have to say that Honey Boy acts kind of like a professional body builder who's having a really bad day. You see, he seems to enjoy working out with cinder blocks. For example, today he knocked over the upper row of the cinder blocks...
Here's a picture of Mr. George sitting in the doorway of the house this morning. In case you're wondering about the redness under his chin, that was from eating cactus fruit for the past few days. :p
Last weekend I pulled all of the weeds in George's pen and planted some really high quality grass seed recommended by @Tom. It's starting to sprout, as you can see in the picture.
We have a male sulcata that likes to ram inanimate objects and knock them down. It's pretty amusing to watch, and I should probably take a video of it. Needless to say, it's a good thing that we keep our tortoises separated at all times. I think the one female we have is driving our males crazy...
Here's part of Mr. George's pen that includes his shady spot.
Here's a long view of his pen. Sibi wants me to expand it to provide him with more room. We're planning to install a gate for easy access without having to step over the wall. I need to plant more grass, too, as the rye grass we...
As of today, Mr. George now has his very own outdoor pen. I finished building the wall this afternoon. It has both sunny and shady areas, with lots of nice green grass to munch on. Sibi or I will post photos soon.
My first introduction to a tortoise was in Jacksonville, Florida, when I happened upon a large gopher tortoise on a nature preserve, not too far from where you were in St. Augustine. Gopher tortoises are considered a threatened species here in Florida and are protected. It's pretty cool that...
