The little spot invetween the scutes on the top of the carapace and the scutes that connect the plastron and carapace. It kinda looks like a line down his side. I've watched as its come in I just am not sure if its smooth growth
As some of you may remember I took in a tortoise, my first, about 2 months ago that didnt have proper care previously. He's been given proper humidity, protein, UV, diet, heat, etc.... I've been expecting all new growth to be smooth. But seeing as this is my first tort and I'm unfamiliar with...
That's what I was looking for. It was just a thought that popped into my head as a possible means of identifying between( what I'm sure will end up being agreed upon as subspecies at some point) the "races" of red foot. Maybe there will be something to it.... With the subspecies of Reticulated...
I'm wondering about the scale pattern on the head; how much variance are you guys seeing amongst the same locale animals, and how major are the differences between localities? And couple some of you post some pics of the various locals scale pattern on the head?
I'm a sucker for localities( I...
I've found orchid bark molds
and cedar contain phenol which is toxic to reptiles, I just don't know if its very high in the bark or if the partially broken down pine bark in the soil is safe.
No, it doesn't have a strong pine smell, but it contains pine for sure. I just got my tort about a month ago and had used some pure topsoil I had lying around from when I used to keep varanids. Apparently all the stores around me now only have topsoil with pine bark in it now. It scares the crap...
Okay so I just got done removing all the dirt out of my RFs cage and filled it back with organic topsoil from Home Depot.... And it seems there pine bark in it. After some research it is pine bark in the soil( and a descent amount of it). Is this typical of topsoil from the big name retailers...
I'm afraid I have to respectfully disagree with you on this.
If I'm not feeding a larger amount of mouse compared to what others are feeding for their animal protein( no one has chimed in yet on the exact quantity of animal protein given in these intervals; I'm not at all opposed to chopping...
Wow this cage and setup are just spectacular. When it comes time for a new cage I know who I'm talking to about plants. Good choice on the thermostat aswell; I love all my herpstats.
My only question( well for the time being) is... What do you do about cage cleaning? Or do the plants take care...
Oh wow, no one feeds mice. Is this any reason why you guys don't feed mice( messy, price, convienece)?
I keep and breed snakes so I always have a freezer full of mice, rats, chickens, guinea pigs, and rabbits. I can't speak for torts but the general thinking for snakes and lizards is whole...
For those of you that feed mice to your red foots; how often do you feed them mice? I've read once a week to once a month. I plan to feed young adult mice to my little guy( he's about 6-7 inchs) as opposed to pinkies for the organ and bone content instead of the high fat low calcium pinkies. Any...
I didn't think he was but he was presented to me as a cherry head. Cool I'd like a larger tort anyway.lol.
It's a strange feeling starting back at the bottom with a new(to me) group of herps. I'm used to being the one with the answers. But you guys are being great and I have a feeling I'm...
Here's the pic I got of him before he was dropped off; I know he's very dry. I'm in the process of fixing that, he's gotten soaks everyday and his humidity is currently at 60% 5 inches above the substrate and 84% in the humid hide. And I've been spraying his food before I offer it to him(not...
I'm a reptilian hypochondriac so cleanliness will not be an issue. How many of you, or people on here, go full on bioactive enclosure(live dirt, leaves from outside, wood mites, springtails, worms, etc...)? Ill stick with a dry hide to escape the moisture if he'd like. I refer to him as a he but...
