    Building an outdoor enclosure

I'm also going to plant things in there for shade and so it will look nice. I was thinking hostas and petunias. I know those are safe for turtles. Any other suggestions?

    Building an outdoor enclosure

I wanted to make it big so he can grow into it but I guess I can expand it as he grows. He will be 2 in October. He is 2.5 inches long and about 2.5 inches wide. I'm thinking i can make a hinged lid with wood and hardware cloth to keep other critters out. I'm also not sure I'm going to leave him...

    Building an outdoor enclosure

HI! My turtle, Pickle, is 1 and a half years old and has been kept indoor since he hatched. I am building an outdoor enclosure some time in the next month because its been very warm outside. He's been spending most of the day outside for the past week since its been so warm. I used top soil...

    Food for the winter

You can buy pill bugs online from niles biological. They're pricy but they ship them fast and they all come alive.

    New enclosure

Pickle has petunias now! I put them in clay pots buried in the substrate. I didn't plant them directly in the substrate because I want to be able to clean the enclosure. Now just waiting on my pill bugs!

    New enclosure

Pickle is 11 months old. He is 2.5 inches long and 2 inches wide. I don't have a weight because I don't have a kitchen scale.

    New enclosure

My temps are 85 under the mvb and 75 on the cool side. I don't really need the che. Night time temps don't go below 70 without lights and heat. I initially thought I'd need more heat because the enclosure is so much bigger than his old one but I don't.

    New enclosure

I took it out. I was reading about it the other day and saw that. I just haven't taken any more pictures.

    New enclosure

I just finished Pickle's new enclosure. It's two 40 gallon Rubbermaid tubs with the sides cut out and taped together with weather proof duct tape. I used 50% topsoil and 50% coconut coir for substrate. I've got three clay pots as hides and some moist miss around them for him to hide in. I'm...

    New Boxie Enclosure

Hi! This is my new boxie enclosure. Pickle is 11 months old and 2.5 inches long and 2 inches wide. I used two 40 gallon rubbermaid containers and cut the sides out and duct taped them together. My substrate is half coconut coir half topsoil. I will be adding some plants to the enclosure soon. I...

    An update and some questions

I'm going to be making a bigger enclosure soon. I know he hasn't outgrown his current enclosure but bigger is better, right? I'm going to get two 50 gallon Rubbermaid tubs and cut out the sides and clamp them together to make one large container. I saw the idea in the tortoise enclosure section...

    An update and some questions

Phoenix worms are soldier fly larvae. They are fairly cheap. I just ordered 100 pill bugs from niles biological. I'm going to put a few of them in his enclosure for him to hunt, cultivate some, and use the rest for feeding. He really gobbles up pill bugs. Here are a few pictures!

    An update and some questions

I live in Georgia. I know it's illegal to own box turtles but mine is captive bred. I know boxies hibernate outside here naturally but if I build an above ground enclosure next summer to house him in I am still worried about it freezing down further than he can dig. And I don't know much about...

    An update and some questions

Hi! My boxie, Pickle, is 10 months old and is 2.5 inches long and 2 inches wide. His hinge seems pretty well developed because the other day I accidentally scared him and he closed up inside his shell. He is happily eating red wiggles every other day and is offered strawberries, mushrooms...

    UVB light

I feel like the MVB gets too hot. It runs sometimes up to 90 degrees. It's also time to replace the bulb I think and I'd rather have something that isn't a MVB. My box I have him in is only 8 inches deep so I don't think velcroing it to the top would work. I'm using a sheet of plexiglass that...

    UVB light

I have my box turtle hatchling, Pickle, in a 41 liter sweater box. It's 17 inches wide. How would I attach a long uvb light to the enclosure without melting the plastic or letting it be too close to the substrate and make it too hot? Right now I'm using a MVB that I don't like. I have a black...

    Help! Hatchling Box Turtle Food

It took my hatchling about two weeks to really eat because he still had his yolk sac. When he did start eating he loved pill bugs and chopped up red wigglers. Now that he is bigger (about an inch and a half across) he eats whole red wigglers and has started snacking on mushrooms, kale, banana...

    Success!

I finally caught Pickle eating some chopped up kale, banana, mushroom, and cantaloupe the other day. I put his red wigglers in the mixture but left the veggies in his enclosure after his feeding. I saw him snacking on it when I went to change his water for the night. He's almost five months old...
