Remember Jasper? He passed away from a respiratory tract infection back in February. Now that I've recovered, I'm ready to get another tortoise. We're getting a Leopard Tortoise (Babcocki) soon. And with a new tortoise comes a (pretty much) new enclosure. It's not done yet-still needs more dirt...
He's back in his enclosure under the lamp, but he keeps putting his head in his shell and opening/closing his mouth like its hard to breathe.
Now nasal discharge-just a little bit. In not going to be able to sleep tonight. Too much worrying.
HELP: he keeps opening and closing his mouth, like its hard to breathe. He made a hissing wheezing sound. Just now, he made a bubbly sound and went into his shell. I know he needs a vet but it's too late right now. I need more help then ever.
He seemed more alert when I took him out of the tub. He would put his legs right back in when I touched then and was looking around. But when I put back in his enclosure, he was just barely opening and closing his mouth a lot, like s tiny, tiny yawn. He made a hissing/wheezing sound just now.
Basking area is 90-100 and the rest of his enclosure is 70-75. I'm not sure what the humidity is, but I mist it every day/other day. I'll get pictures after he's done soaking...
UPDATE: I've soaked him for the second time today, and he's a more active in the water, but won't open his eyes. He would stomp around the tub sometimes and look around, and scratch at his eyes. Not like he didn't want to open them, like he couldn't. First time I soaked him only one eye was open.
I'll start the baby food soaks. The swelling has gone down (not even sure if it was swelling, it was just on his chin). Basking area is 95-100 F, the rest of enclosure is 70-75 F.
Substrate is soil and coconut fiber. The enclosure is covered. He has heat and moisture. We took him to a tortoise breeder and she thinks he's just constipated (that's why he's not eating or moving around) and needs more calcium.
UPDATE. AGAIN: We took Jasper to a person that breeds and sells tortoises at Petsmasrt. She thinks Jasper is constipated and needs more calcium. She instructed to give him soaks 2-3 times a day. I also put calcium powder in his soaking water. He seems more alert and responsive now that he's been...
