    Best Grass Types?

The timing of this post couldn't have come at a better time. I'm also looking to grow grass from seed, as we are moving to a new property. Would this mix be a good choice for Desert Tortoises, as well as a Sulcata? (separate enclosures, of course). Thanks!

@vladimir @Tom Thank you! I ordered a new one. Thank goodness for one day delivery! :)

    Single Tortoise Night Box

Hi @Tom oe anyone else who can help me answer this question... I'm getting the heating elements installed on my Sulcata House, but I'm a bit of an over thinker. I have the same heating elements exactly that you list here, however, I could only find a 500W temp controller. Apparently, Zilla is...

How to properly hibernate my two desert tortoises

Hi! No worries... I'm always slow to respond, as I don't always see my notifications. Anyway, how old are your CDTs? It can be so stressful! I've also read it's good to keep them awake if they are sick/injured or you get to know their habits, but it's certainly not as easy as it sounds. Does our...

    Single Tortoise Night Box

Okay, thank you! I have one in my cart on that site already. I'm looking to purchase the Kane mat, the radiant heating panel, and the 1000w thermostat...basically everything Tom has listed in this post for heating. I'm starting from scratch, as I'm currently bringing the dude inside every night.

    Single Tortoise Night Box

TGIF @Tom I'm going to be building this exact box this weekend, hoping to get the heated elements ordered today as well... My question is do you have a particular website you order through consistently, or would recommend? I called our local small business pet supply to see if they could order...

How to properly hibernate my two desert tortoises

All very good information. thank you! I've read through the different posts, and I will try out the refrigerator after I can be sure of the temperatures. And yes, our weather is erratic. I'm in Thousand Oaks, so just over the mountains from the ocean. I don't think we get as cold as you do at...

    Single Tortoise Night Box

Hi @Tom Curious where you place tubs of water in this set up? Do you have a built in shelf that runs across the top, like you do in the CDT house set up I saw on another thread? Thanks!

How to properly hibernate my two desert tortoises

okay. interesting. Recently we replaced our roof with a foam roof (1962 flat roof) and it's amazing how much consistent the temp in our garage is...it's cool in the heat and not freezing when the temps drop below 40. I've been impressed. Nonetheless, you're right...it's 85* outside right now...

How to properly hibernate my two desert tortoises

Great post, as always Tom. Thanks for linking it. I've never heard of using a fridge for hibernation. Are you talking about an actual kitchen fridge or freezer?

How to properly hibernate my two desert tortoises

Hi! How is it going with your DTs? Did you ever get an answer to your question about hibernation? I also have two CDT and once they have settled in for their winter nap (which for me, was just about two weeks ago), and the temps start dropping rather low at night (~50*F), I move them each into...

Found Sulcata - Immediate Care Advice, please :)

oh yes, I've been reading Tom's posts and care sheets for close to a year now, in trying to decide if a Sulcata is a good choice for my next tortoise. They're so very informative. I'm probably going to wait on any heat pad, in case I can return it to it's home, but I keep our house thermostat...

Found Sulcata - Immediate Care Advice, please :)

I've done a fair amount of reading on Sulcata's before this dude showed up, as I've been seriously considering adopting. My first guess was that I was going to need to bring it in at night. I guess I'll be heading to Home Depot for a rubbermaid bin, for night sleeping. During the day, I'll give...

Found Sulcata - Immediate Care Advice, please :)

Hello! Soooo, the most random thing happened today...we found a Sulcata in our (very secure) backyard CDT habitat!! As we came to find out, while we were on a camping trip last week, our gardner found a Sulcata walking across the street from a large park by our house, didn't see anyone around it...

CDT pair...separate or is adding more to the family okay?

Okay, so now I'm curious... I've gone back and read quite a bit more information from multiple posts in the forum and articles on sexing and it seems I should be able to determine sex for at least my oldest, who is 16 years old and 9". What am I missing? @Yvonne G I've seen that you post on...

CDT pair...separate or is adding more to the family okay?

Okay, thank you! gosh, I thought I could maybe make a somewhat educated guess at sex once my dudes hit a minimum of 9"... the wild guess for my little dude of 7" was more wishful thinking than anything. At what size do you feel you can accurately determine the sex of a CDT? In the meantime, I...

CDT pair...separate or is adding more to the family okay?

Thank you! This is all really good information, and all makes perfect sense. I'm pretty sure my oldest (16y old) is a female, and I think my littlest (9yo, 7") is quite possibly female...? Could I have lucked out with two females, considering I've had them since they were tiny tiny? Now, I'm...
