I tried, I sent over the sheets on boxing day last year but they stand by the word of their reptile vet who obviously still has the information from the previous generation of tortoise owners. It's hard to argue their point when mine is much smaller than theirs, they don't see future problems .

That's reassuring. I was worried from the start because they dry-house their tort on wood chips. I wasn't sure if I was missing something with mine. I think theirs is slightly older anyway so give it another year or so and hopefully mine will catch up.

Not sure what your opinions are on the substrate (it may be working fine now) but I go to Pets at Home regularly and I use the Reptile Blocks of Coco Coir, they hold humidity MUCH better than the limestone mixed stuff.

Are you likely to be moving between homes a lot? A tortoise can get stressed out very easily so moving him often will make him uncomfortable and uneasy about his surroundings. I managed to win my mum over (I didn't need her approval, but she's not a great reptile lover) by letting her know...

A timer plug is definitely an investment, I bought one even for when I'm here just in case I fancy a lie in! I just got back from a weekend away and my housemate was more than happy to chuck in a few weeds and make sure Vince was right side up :)

What did they tell you? I know a lot of people read information on here and go against it because of things they hear elsewhere. Its entirely up to you but on this site people have owned and bred tortoises for their entire lives and are happy to help :)

The size law is very strange :) is it there to protect the tortoises or to protect the people who bring WC to the US?
