Riverside CA area- Show me you can care for a DT-Must find him a home.

When he wakes up around March 17th, he should have a better place. Extreme heat and a medical condition keeps me from monitoring him well in the summer. This has been ok for many years. The new neighbors have a pit bull on their side of the fence. The dog charges anything along the fence when he...

How hot is too hot ?

This is our 2nd summer with Sherman. We are continuously improving his living space, slow and steady adding plants, more shade and such. In his night box how hot is too hot for him ? Now there is an additional green shade on top. This photo only has wire mesh on top, hard to see and not...

CA desert tortoise posted for adoption at Sanbernardino shelter

Just out of curiosity today I looked at surrounding shelters for a tortoise and found one with no problem. He was listed with "act quickly as this shelter does not hold pets for long". Lovely flowering bush with rapid growth. :Pampas Grass. Another...

    Neighbors found a giant sulcata

Excellent start to the day. Neighbor frantically knocking on our door saying " Your tortoise is loose wandering in the street a block away ". We checked and our guy is snoozing in his night box like an angel. Sure enough there is ANOTHER big sulcata in the neighborhood that is wandering around...

Question about desert tortoise returning to burrow now, in June.

Is the extreme heat causing "Roady" to return to his winter burrow or should this be a concern? He does not seem to come out. Another DT, my "Shellby" has a new hiding place I don't know where and HE is making fewer appearances also. Shellby is not being fed as often because he is hiding more...

Also part of the area includes orange orchards and fruit trees. Will falling fruit be a health issue...
