Hi All,
We got our first RF last winter - a female, Lily (formerly known as Louie on the forum before we learned her gender). Lily is about 7 inches long. We have her in a large 100 gallon tank with as much outdoor time as our NW weather permits. She seems happy and thriving.
We recently...
Hi All,
I have been keeping my RF, Louie sequestered in a small portion of his huge tank while he has been recovering from illness. He has been eating some greens, radicchio, banana, peaches and berries. Just opened up the insulation wall to the rest of the tank and he ran straight for the...
Thanks for all the great advice! Maggie, I did offer some raddicchio and romaine while Louie was soaking yesterday and he ate some up! Did the same thing with banana and that worked too! Yay for an appetite! Thanks for the tip...
Thanks all for your replies and well wishes! Louie seems to be on the mend to me. He has been eating the last couple days. I actually have been floating some food in the water with him while he is soaking and he has been eating it (perhaps out of boredom!) I hate giving him the shots...he...
Thanks so much, Tim and Robin! One more question, I am inclined to increase soaks as I am concerned about dehydration with the alck of eating and increased temps. Would you advise that, or is the trade off in increased stress not worth it?
Should I change the site of injection each time when administering baytril? Also, is it expected that my RF is not eating since this treatment began? His appetite had been decreasing, but today was day 2 of now food :-(. Thanks for your help!
Katie
Thanks, guys for your well wishes and hopeful message. I may write a letter to the manager at the pet store, but don't expect that they will be helping out with vet bills. Their policy is that you return the sick animal for a refund...then they will take it to the vet and if it can be...
Hi All,
We have had Louie now for nearly two weeks. Louie is a 6inch RF who came from a petsore. He had been there several months and every time I would see him he would be active, exploring, soaking and eating. About a week before we brought him home they introduced a new little RF in his...
I have pondered this same question and have decided to avoid the under tank heat. What I noticed is that my little redfoot would burrow down deep, in an effort I think to find a cool spot, instead he just got hotter and hotter (over 100 degrees with my food thermometer down in the substrate)...
Thanks Laura,
Yes, I have been worried he hasn't been eating enough. He really could take our leave the greens and cucumbers it seems. He has eaten small amounts of strawberry, banana, tomato and peach pretty well but he never finishes what I give him and I feel it is a pretty small amount...
Hi all,
We have had our little redfoot, Louie, for about a week and a half now. Have been trying not to handle him often at all. In fact I just put him in his water dish when I change the water and put his food out...otherwise he may never leave his hide. He usually will wander out of his...
Thanks again for all of your wonderful advice and support. So we are going on our third day with little Louie. As many predicted, he is hiding out a lot. I am concerned that he isn't super interested in eating. At the store, I observed him pigging out on some multicolored pellets of some...
So I recently completed my "tortarium" with both a 100w light fixture and an under tank heating pad. Both came with the tank from the previous owner who used the set up for a snake. As I have been observing our new tortoise and really checking the heat situation, I have decided just to unplug...
I am not sure how many gallons to be honest. 18 tall X 18 wide x 72 long. I am sure there is someway to figure out how many gallons that would hold...but my math skills aren't up for that this morning ;-)
Hi All! We got the 6 inch RF today. No hope for a discount, but I think things worked out for the best...we feel good about starting as a one tort family for now ;-). "Louie" is awesome, eating and exploring despite the excited children crowded around the tank. He/she is very sweet and...
I put in a big bag of organic soil, the covered that with a couple blocks of coconut coir and then put one bag of cyprus mulch on top of that. I think next time I change it out I will use all coconut coir as it retains moisture so well and was pretty inexpensive at the nursery.
So we put a thermometer through the substrate down to the glass under the hide and it registered at 120 degrees! Yikes! I have moved the hide off the heating pad area but still have it on the warmer half of the tank. Do you think it will be okay to have the heating pad there with a hefty layer...
