I was very active on this forum when I got them and was under the impression they were more of a desert tortoise so high humidity would be bad. I must have misunderstood. I hear so many bad things about mold and humidity that I just assumed. They are in a glass tank with an open top. I pour...
I just recently added it in March. I've been crunching it up on top of the greens and leaving some chunks but they wouldn't touch it. Just in the last few days I caught them both eating it. I think it takes time and they will choose greens over it but they do eat it.
I'm really embarrassed to be asking this, but why are the shells of my pancakes not smooth? This is a difficult post because I feel people will judge me for this. I think I posted a long time ago when my male was younger but it was fairly minor then. It still isn't bad on him, but it is...
RE: Should I or shouldn't I
Obviously everything came from the wild originally, but captive bred animals are available, so why wouldn't someone purchase captive bred? I said that I would not recommend purchasing wild caught, but I did not tell anyone they cannot do it, just that I would not...
Get the redfoots for ethical reasons. I would never recommend supporting people who make money off taking animals out of the wild and depleting the wild populations. If you want a pancake get one from a reputable breeder. They will be healthier and happier.
On a side note, Pancakes hide a...
Looks much better with the flat rocks. I would raise some of the ones on the right side so there are more rocky hiding places. The rocks flat on the bottom are useless, in my experience. I would expect that the hay will mold under the water dish. Maybe put it on a rock or on a plate. Is the...
Yep, I put my food right at the opening to the hide. I have food available all day long and I rarely handle except to move them outside/inside or to their water for soaking.
When you feed him keep all the different types of veggies separate. If he doesnt like one and it is mixed in with the others he will not eat. Mine hates herbs. If there are herbs on his greens he will taste and walk away. He is also picky about some others so instead of chopping it all up...
Sorry to hear this. From the pictures of the condition they were in and everything you told us, they were likely starved of food, proper nutrients, and UVB lighting. They may have had parasites, but the vet should have already ruled that out. They were likely dying when you got them. There...
This is terrible news :( I'm very sorry to hear about your losses. I have no experience with what you are going through. The only medical problems I've had is a prolapsed rectum.
I really hope your other one makes it though. I'd like to know what the previous owner did, or didnt do, that...
I got one from Tim/Robin last year. She/he is awesome. I'm so jealous of your cute little baby. Makes me want another. I love your pictures and play by play. He/she looks to have a great home with you.
Here is mine from Tim/Robin:
Last year (She is the small one, the other is my male)...
I just checked and I never got blood work done on mine, just a fecal smear. It isn't anything you are doing wrong. They were likely wild caught, housed with other species, no UVB, improper diet, and/or in very dirty enclosures. Likely enclosures that were too wet and harbored disease, or...
Is it shedding? Are you familiar with shell sheds?
Below your finger looks bad. Like a lack of UVB and the shell rotting away. That pale part with the red dot. I've seen that a lot with turtles. Could just be a scrape though.
Where did you get these guys?
When I see that shell I think that maybe she was starved at some point in her life. Either in the wild or in captivity with someone.
Enclosure looks great. I prefer to keep mine outdoors when its warm out. I have the same problem as you with their behavior. They will flip flop on who is...
How old? That shell could be nutritional as well as lighting. Obviously something was lacking when she was growing. My captive bred has pyramiding but not that bad. Sounds like you are doing everything right. Good luck.
I didn't notice where you were from. Us rare north dakota people love to have a more rare tortoise I guess.
I do rearrange to keep them active. I don't rearrange often because I honestly don't know if they are active because it stresses them out or not. They actually seem to have a ton of...
