What's the most difficult tortoise to look after?

In the SNOW?? How cold does it get where you live? And how much does it cost to run the radiator per month? I'd love to keep a Sulcata, they're the best looking tortoises IMO, but I was always hesitant because the winters in the UK can occasionally drop to -10 or -20 C (between 14 and -4 F).

    Produce for people

I've heard quite a bit on how produce is 'too nutritious' for tortoises, animals which have evolved to digest poor quality vegetation high in fibre instead of calories and carbohydrates. This is taken from Tortoise Trust's site: "Jarchow (1984) published a detailed analyses and comparison...

    Wild vs Pet

I believe tortoises do not function based solely on instincts, but learned behaviour too. When they come to you, a giant in their eyes, they are doing so because they have learnt that you are not a threat and that good things normally come from you. This has made you more than just a 'food god'...

What's the most difficult tortoise to look after?

I imagine Sulcatas in a cold climate would be difficult. Their size makes an outdoor enclosure a necessity so the electricity bills would likely burn a hole in your pocket since you have to keep the heat running all year round. But in the right climate, tortoises are actually quite hardy since...

    What makes you an "expert"?

Back to the UK but haven't decided on where yet (I'll move to wherever I find work in). I used to live in London though.

    What makes you an "expert"?

Haha! That's actually just a photo from google :D My torts have been adopted by my aunt since I moved to Australia (they're very strict about keeping non-native animals as pets). I'll be moving back in a couple of years though, so I'm looking forward to keeping torts again. :)

    What makes you an "expert"?

An expert to me is someone who not only has experience but knowledge that can be backed up by science. Someone with 30 years experience but unable to provide sources for their claims is less of an expert to me than someone who has 5 years experience but can provide multiple studies to prove his...

What To Do About Pics Of Inappropriate Tortoise Practices?

I think the best approach is to point it out but with tact. If the goal is to help them avoid health issues with their pets, a tactful advice is the most appropriate response. Maybe you can let them know it can cause health issues but also compliment that their tortoise is beautiful/adorable?

    The importance of hibernation.

The only problem I can see in not hibernating your tortoise would be a slightly reduced lifespan since hibernation lowers metabolism and thus oxidative stress (linked to cancers). With that said, lifespan in tortoises are already very long, so I don't know if not hibernating them would make a...

    Hybrid tortoises

I don't really mind hybrids but not a huge fan either since none of them look more amazing than other regular species. With that said, if it happens in captivity, then so be it. I don't condone releasing them into the wild, though it's unlikely they'll survive or thrive to the point of...
