Finally buying a leo-- but which one to get?

I've been looking for a baby leopard for a little while, and I've finally narrowed my search to 2 animals. There's a local guy who's been working with torts for a while, and currently is breeding radiated torts, but has bred leopards in the past. The currently babies he has aren't his own, but...

Should I buy a baby leo fed grains?

Hi guys, I'm interested in buying a baby leo from a local guy who says he breeds leopards. He's got a collection of baby leos that all look and act healty. However, he told me that he feeds them grains in addition to various grasses, leafy lettuces, weeds, and carrots. Some of the larger babies...

How long is the "delicate" stage for hatchlings?

Regarding size, a sulcata at 3 months is probably as large as a Russian at 1 yrs (I think)-- do you suppose they would be equally hardy at those respective ages?

How long is the "delicate" stage for hatchlings?

There are a lot of articles and care sheets out there stating that beginners shouldn't take on a hatchling because they're more delicate than a young tortoise that has "weathered the storm", so to speak. But how long before a hatchling is out of the delicate stage? I've seen some recommend...

How to tell if tort is wild caught or CBB?

So the fact that it's smaller than 4" doesn't immediately rule out that it's wild caught or farmed because of those laws I mentioned?

How to tell if tort is wild caught or CBB?

I went to a local reptile shop this morning to take a look at their inventory. It had 4 little Greeks in the 2-2-1/2" size. The guy in the store told me that they were "100% captive born" almost a year ago, but how do I tell if he's telling the truth? I know African torts are no longer...

Thinking of getting a tortoise-- what type?

Is the care of Greeks and Hermann's similar to that of Russians? Are they less resilient or harder to take care of than Russians?

Thinking of getting a tortoise-- what type?

Can a Russian tort not be kept outdoors year-round in Southern CA? Or will it need supplemental heat or a basking site? Also, the more I look into Hermann's and Greek tortoises, the more I like them. It looks like their care/temp requirements and size are similar to that of Russians, but I...

Thinking of getting a tortoise-- what type?

I know there are lots of "which tortoise should I get?" threads and FAQs, and I've read a lot of those but still can't figure it out. A couple months ago, I found a young 4-5" sulcata on my driveway and ended up buying lots of things (large plastic container, 2 lamps, halogen and MV bulbs...

    Leopards less hardy than sulcatas?

A couple months ago, my family found a ~5" sulcata tortoise in our front yard/driveway. Someone eventually claimed it about 2 wks later, but during that time, I went through a crash course in sulcata care, and actually did a decent job, IMO. :D Right now, I have a 35 gallon plastic tub, a...

"Regular" thermometer vs laser temp gun

Which is the generally preferred means of checking temperature, one that measures the air temp (via dial or probe) or a laser temp gun? I understand the latter checks surface temps, which doesn't reflect the air temp always.

How long before baby sulcata no longer hides from me?

The closest thing I've had to this is goldfish, which have the Pavlovian response to people-- when they see people, they know food is coming. I have my tort on grass in the container (I should change it to something not from the hardware store to get rid of the chemicals, though...); I wonder if...

How long before baby sulcata no longer hides from me?

I've posted in a few other threads that I found a small 4-5" sulcata in my driveway about a week ago. Someone probably released or lost his/her tort recently. In any case, I have it in a large plastic tub and it seems to be doing well, but it still hides from people whenever someone gets close...

    Do young sulcatas eat grass?

I just saw my tort taking a few bites out of the SA grass. It certainly did look tougher than other grasses, but it was able to do it without too much difficulty. The grass was bought in a 18" x 18" plastic pan at a hardware store. should I chop it up for the tortoise instead?

Anybody use a dog kennel as an outdoor enclosure?

The wire looks pretty sturdy. Are raccoons really that powerful? This is becoming more difficult. :( What size does a sully have to be before it's safe from cats, rats, and raccoons?

Anybody use a dog kennel as an outdoor enclosure?

Thanks, I was thinking about the one jacob linked to. But that one doesn't have a bottom; do you think it's possible an animal like a raccoon could lift the kennel and sneak inside?

Anybody use a dog kennel as an outdoor enclosure?

I have a small 5" sulcata that will quickly grow larger. It's going to be impractical to house in inside really soon, but I'm worried about predators outdoors. Is a dog kennel with a cover an acceptable enclosure? Obviously, the space between the bars on the kennel can't be too wide, but will...

Large dog cage/crate as an enclosure...

Specifically for a young sulcata, currently 5" in length. Size is somewhat limited indoors, so I'm thinking of putting it outdoors. However, we've got a variety of potential predators, so it has to be in a protected enclosure like one of these for outside...

    Do young sulcatas eat grass?

I have a 5" sulcata that I got just a few days ago. I have him in a large plastic container at this time and have filled it half with grass, hoping to provide it grazing substrate. However, it doesn't eat the grass. It will eat some of the leaf lettuce I provide it, so I know it eats. I've read...

Found a sulcata tortoise in my driveway! Please help... (LONG)

I think I'm going to keep it. Just too much of a coincidence for me to give it up right now. Yesterday, I went to a couple herp stores and hardware stores to pick up some things. This is the enclosure I put together for now. It's a large plastic tub (close to 2 x 3 ft) with a clamp lamp...
