    Tortoise goes under substrate lining

My baby Russian tortoise keeps crawling under his substrate lining. He lives in a wooden enclosure with coconut fiber substrate. The lining for the substrate is a cut shower curtain, which is held up on the walls with masking tape. He somehow tears it down and crawls underneath the lining. What...

Will My Russian Tortoise Be OK?

OK, thanks a lot for assuring me that he's all right. I suspected that since tortoises are reptiles they can handle stuff like this (reptiles don't need as much oxygen as mammals). I have retaped the plastic so this hopefully won't happen again.

Will My Russian Tortoise Be OK?

Today I came home and I tried to find my Russian to give him a soak (he's usually burrowed or in his dark area). I was shocked when I saw he was under the plastic that I lined to keep my weed enclosure from rotting! I attached a photo of what the corner he was in looks like (it was actually a...

Is the lip on my water dish too high?

I have a shower curtain underneath the substrate.

Is the lip on my water dish too high?

How does the tortoise get air if it's sealed? How do you get UV, heat, and light in the enclosure? Can you look in to see your tortoise without opening the lid? My humidity is usually between 50-70 percent (usually its around 55 but it goes back up once I spray it with water). I think the issue...

Is the lip on my water dish too high?

My enclosure closes and locks, but it still has a wire opening on the top. So I'm not sure what you would call that. It's the Zoo Med tortoise house if you want to look it up and look at it.

Is the lip on my water dish too high?

I sunk the dish a little more into the substrate so I think it's good now. But I can't figure out how to stop my enclosure from drying out quickly. The sphagnum moss and substrate get kind of dry despite me spraying it and adding water to it often. What do I do about that?

Is the lip on my water dish too high?

I also see my tortoise drink occasionally when he's being soaked. :-)

Is the lip on my water dish too high?

Maybe I took a bad picture because the dish is actually very shallow and the sides have a slight curve to them. I'll take another picture later with my tortoise when he isn't in his burrow.

Is the lip on my water dish too high?

I added more water this morning. It feels damp, but maybe it's not damp enough. How do I tell?

Is the lip on my water dish too high?

I think it's about as gripy as a terracotta saucer.

Is the lip on my water dish too high?

I already looked for terracotta plant saucers but the depth on all of them was too high. So, someone on the forum reccomended this bonsai tray. How would a terracotta plant saucer be any better? I soak him daily.

Is the lip on my water dish too high?

I never see my tortoise go into his water bowl or drink out of it. Could it be because the lip on my water dish is too high so my tortoise never tries to go into it? I've attached a picture. It's a baby Russian tortoise by the way, so it's pretty small.

My Tortoise Stays in His Burrow For a While

I just got a baby Russian tortoise today. He digs burrows and stays there instead of going into his hiding place. Will he suffocate or get hurt? I took him out once because I got worried but he went back in a few minutes later. I'm sure he's fine but I just want to double check with you guys...

Carol S: Great Russian Tortoise Vendor

I just received a tortoise from Carol S. I was very satisfied with my experience doing business with her. She offered me an amazing price for a captive bred baby Russian tortoise. She is very knowledgeable about the care of Russian tortoises and one can tell that she is legitamently passionate...

Question about Captive Bred and Wild Caught

I have heard that I need to soak babies. If I have a 12" water dish which is deep enough for them to soak in, do I still need to soak them since they can just soak themselves? Also, on the topic of water dishes, should the water dish be under or away from the heat source?
