    Outdoor redfoot enclosure

Anytime it will be below 65° outside I manually put my tortoises in their house and block them in with a cinderblock. I did that for a few weeks and now whether the heat is on or off they sleep in their houses every night!

    Outdoor redfoot enclosure

Where are you located? Since mine are outside they don’t have any “Substrate” per se. I have some cypress mulch in their houses to keep them out of the mud during thunderstorm season. So in their enclosure they are on the natural ground. All plants are GONE so they are just on sand/soil and...

How to preserve eggs before incubator arrival?

Very cool, congrats! Do you have a feed store or farm supply store nearby? I have 3 within 15 mins of my house that sell “Little Giant” incubators that have done great for me.

    Outdoor redfoot enclosure

The first 2 outdoor enclosures I made had a couple inches of wood underground, but since mine have never dug in future enclosures it is just flush with the ground. I have 2 plywood houses 4 ft square that have CHEs mounted inside. I switch out the bulbs depending on how cold it is. When we had...

    Babies getting some sun!

Repticon is usually great, it’s a “Zoo for sale!” That’s why I can’t go to the show, I’ll bring a new species home and my yard and office are already full! My wife is grateful I don’t have any snakes right now and she is hoping it stays that way. I have Hatchlings 3mo- 3 days old. I’ll PM you...

    Babies getting some sun!

Thank you, That’s great! I was thinking about going, but the cost wouldn’t really make sense to just sell a few baby tortoises. I might team up with someone to share cost for next show. It’s a hobby for me not really a business

Love taking the babies into the planted clover for some pure natural UV! Some Start munching, some run for shade, they are all in their happy place! We’ve had lots of FL Heat in February so they’ve got Lots of outside time before they move to new homes!

Is a CHE the best heat source for a red foot hatchling indoors?

I’m in Tampa Bay too. I use CHE inside and out. I have 150w in my adults outside houses to take the edge off the cold nights right now, but not bother their eyes with bright lights! I have had to use a 250w infrared brooder bulb for the nights it gets below freezing (rare but happened last...

    New babies in the house!

Thanks! I sell them. Hard to let them go, but every person that was bought one or a couple have been so excited, it’s fun to share that joy. But I do keep them a few weeks and make sure they are started great, a pile for sure!! Other eggs have hatched. It’s interesting to see how they progress...

    Can Anyone Explain. . .

It’s is mind boggling sometimes. I am watching a couple redfoot eggs now that look healthy but just haven’t pipped even those the others of the clutch did! Within a week I’ve had Hatchlings from 8/30, 9/26, 9/30. Still watching 1 egg from 8/30, and 1 from 9/26... I guess I’ll just be patient...

    2 days old nest

Congrats. Keep them in the incubator you never know! Follow the incubation tips on this forum. In a couple months you should see a shadow form in the bottom of the egg with some light up top. I’ve found a couple nests in the ground at least 2-3 days after laying and they still came out...

    New babies in the house!

We have several clutches in the incubator still baking but we were pretty pumped to find these 3 in the pen during a light rain storm 2 weeks ago. Any from the incubator will probably be female, but who knows about these guys?!?!

    Easy red foot enclosure .

Hi Mike, thanks for the great ideas and post. What kind of thermostats do you recommend and how would you set it up? Where did you get them? I did this “kind” of setup for my last hatchlings, but not so automated.
