Hello,
I've been using incandescent flood lights for basking lights and it has been working great. Problem is, they are getting more challenging to find as they are being phased out for LEDs.
I was just at the local Home Depot and this store quit carrying them. I could always stock up, but...
I don't normally do "pet photos" and I consider our torts first class family members and not really pets or property. However, my company is having a "cutest pet picture contest" in which the winner gets to choose an animal charity for the company to donate money to.
So exceptions being made...
I should also declare that based on descriptions and pictures of other males I have seen, "her" plastron doesn't seem to be the slightest bit concave. Hence the surprise of sex.
Maybe I'm expecting to see too much?
I forgot the average age before they start flashing, can someone remind me? I...
Thanks. Ask and you shall receive :)
These two are from the same shoot this morning.
This misses loves Twilight more than life itself. She's already declared, in a natural disaster she's grabbing Twilight first, then waking me up if time permits.
boy!
She (he?) exposed himself few times over the past few weeks.
We are trying to refer to her as a him now. Will take time.
Hatched November of 2016. We were leaning female, but we were wrong.
Having beaks and no teeth, torts don't chew. They chop bites off and swallow what chunks they rip.
Personally, I don't chop anything other than cactus pads and my guys do well.
Every now and then I will use the Ninja to make a really fine mixed medley. They always love that.
Interesting topic. I think you will find that it will be very difficult to get clinical data on this, due to the longer lifespans tortoises have. I suspect there simply isn't enough documented data.
I remember asking one of my vets the lifespan question, and I was told the average in the pet...
75 lbs is a lot of tortoise to "disappear". The paint part makes it even more sad. Hope it ends well for him.

"Next question."
Haha, jk. The cost eventually became the elephant in the room that I didn't want to acknowledge. I could have probably cut corners here and there, but I chose to do it right the first time. The glass and the paint were the priciest.
All in all, with all electrical, wiring...
So it's been a few months and everything is still solid. The paint (inside and out) is holding up well with the 90% humidity.
The vinyl flooring in the upper level is the way to go. It's in excellent shape and hasn't negatively affected the residents. I'll be converting the lower to vinyl when...
I have used (all separately)
Coco coir
Cypress mulch
Fine grade orchid bark
All worked well for me, but I stick with orchid bark for the following reasons: much cleaner than coir, readily available in large quantities from my garden center, holds moisture just fine, perfect size and minimal...
Great thread and discussion.
We have one or two resident rats in the backyard. They disappeared last year but seem to have come back this year.
I have also been hesitant to use poison for the reasons stated above and also fear of my torts ingesting it while in the yard.
I'm all open to...
