What are y’all using for your temperature controller these days? I’ve had two inkbirds in the last two years and they just don’t seem to last. One stopped sending power to the heater and the second lost wifi capability. I’d love to get something that will last longer than a year.

I love the term ‘dracula effect’ haha! This is the first time I’m hearing about folks trimming beaks. Didn’t know that was a thing. Satchel has very intimidating dracula fangs and there’s no way I’d be able to clip them. He’s feisty!
Good point. I may need to look into better insulation. His house a bit cooler than outside but not by that much. I have plans to redo his roof in the fall and will add more insulation.
We have an inkbird temperature probe with heating/cooling outlets in Satchel’s house. We haven’t used the cooling feature but this summer is dang hot!! Does anyone have a fan they like and could recommend? I’ve looked at desk fans, computer fans, and greenhouse exhaust fans and can’t decide so...
We just finished building Satchel a new winter house but I’m finding that the heater we got is having a hard time keeping the temp up when it gets cold out.
We currently have this heater in his house hooked up to the inkbird thermostat. We’re considering getting something like this instead...
Thanks for this post Tom! I want to make sure I understand all of the tech inside a winter house.
- Heat source, like an oil heater, blocked off so the tort doesn't mess with it.
- Small fan, optional?, to keep warm air circulating.
- Remote probe, to monitor temp and send alerts to your...
Ours got a respiratory infection this year too. Cold, wet spring. We took him to a vet and did a couple rounds of antibiotics. What fianlly helped him was high temps, sunlight, and fresh forage. (We moved around the same time from a house with a small, shady yard and mostly hay to eat to a house...
Hey Jackie! Sounds like the house might be too warm for him. I don’t think you’d need to heat it if it’s above 70 outside.
Every spring our male gets super frisky. One summer I had left the lid of the bbq grill on the ground in a place he could access it. He found it to be the perfect size and...
Silly torts! Eventually, they'll figure out the hides you've provided for them or they'll find their own. You could try putting some yummy food inside the hide and then placing your torts at the entrance, looking in, so that they understand it's a good place to go inside.
They're stubborn...
Thank you! My name is Mollie. Satchel and I live in Austin, TX so he's getting lots of good heat, sun, and humidity. And I'm getting lots of air conditioning!
Yes, I love that little house! I've put scrapbooking paper on the outside to make it looks like plank wood. That's where he was...
It's hard to tell exactly what they are. The third one especially, since it's so young. I suggest you clip a bit of each and take the sample to a local nursery or extension office. They might be more help than searching online, since they'll know what kind of plants grow in your area.
You...
Hello Everyone!
I've just finished Satchel's new patio home! There's a few more things I'd like to add to it, but it's secure and Satchel seems to enjoy having more space. He's already pooped in it and I think that means he approves. :)
The wood I used isn't as tall as I'd like, so I opted...
Hello Everyone!
Thank you all so much for your suggestions! I will set him up with an outside area on our balcony. Luckily, our patio is double the length of a typical apt. patio, so I can dedicate an 8ft x 5ft space to his enclosure. I've found a few people on craigslist giving away scrap...
Hello Everyone!
First, let me say that I am so glad to have found this forum!
I have a baby Sulcata named Satchel, whom I fondly refer to as The Satchel Monster. He'll turn 3 years old this October.
Here's my issue:
When I got him, I was living in Phoenix, Arizona in a rented home...
