Hi Rustyiron
So sorry to hear. I have some experience with this once. With my 1 year old aldabra. He couldnt poo for a three or four days and was severely constipated. He strained hard to pass feces but nothing would pass. He then refused to eat and was very slow are tired. It was about three...
I think its called Indian lettece? Its a leafy green used to feed tortoises in my neck of the woods. I try to vary thier diet as much as possible... so its a mix of supermarket greens, timothy hay, bermuda grass, small amounts of alfafa, dandelion, sow thistle, hisbicus, clover etc. I also give...

Hi All!
Just a few pics of Goldie and Shelly. Its been so far (touch wood) a relatively mild winter...lucky since it was their first winter living outside.
Here is Shelly tearing up the lawn....
And then Goldie after a snack... he likes the concrete more than the lawn (go figure)...
Hi Everyone!
Merry Christmas! Wish you all a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Glad to report that Shelly's eyes got better, her abcess has shrunk and is no longer pink! No need for surgery anymore!

I have sent my vet the photos today... hopefully will get an answer. Will try to send exoticdr a message as well. Thanks for the suggestion!
I am not so sure about the newspaper. The ambient humidity is around 60%. They dont really sleep on top of the newspaper but rather in the hay. The...

RE: Homeland news & views
Wow! Thank you so much for willing to share information and knowledge of the atoll! There has been questions i always wanted to ask about their native environment.
1) what is the daily and yearly range in terms of temperature? How hot and cold does it get?
2) any...
RE: Goldie & Shelly's New Home
Its been a week since the kids have been move to an outdoor environment. Shelly appears to br handling it well, she will venture out of the hut and go roam around the outdoor pen munching on grass. Goldie however is not so keen. In fact he rarely volunteerily walk...
RE: Goldie & Shelly's New Home
Pop up green houses? Like the ones where its a frame wrapped by pvc sheet? Thats a good idea! Can remove once winter is over as well. Though when they get big, will they be able to just ram straight through the sheeting?
I will give the coir a try then. Thanks!!
Btw, I read some of your others posts before, on IR radiated panels for heating during winter. How did that work out for you?
RE: Goldie & Shelly's New Home
Thanks for your helpful advice (as always!). On coir, i spoke to my vet at length about this (he was a tortoise specialist), he told me that he wasnt keen on coir as it could lead to impaction as well. That is why i dont use it anymore. Any thoughts on that? I...
RE: Goldie & Shelly's New Home

Hello Everyone!
Well, after weeks of delay, we finally moved Goldie and Shelly to their new place today! We had to wait till now as the seed mix that we sowed refused to germinate and flourish (I am probably the only person on the planet that have trouble growing weeds!). Any case, we moved...
Hi Greg,
Just a quick question if you don't mind...
For a fully grown Aldabra, any idea how much as percentage of body does an adult eat, roughly speaking? I think I read somewhere that a horse eats about 2.5% of it's weight a day, but since Aldabra are suppose to digest their food less...
