Only thing I don't like about this model is that the temperature changes slightly based on the distance especially in water. I own two of them because they're cheap.

I had one at work that was very expensive and much more precise.
Two lasers.
I could measure the temperature of an individual 14 gauge wire inside a cluster of wiring.

I believe they all do change a bit depending on the distance. My hub used them in his job, not real cheap ones, RayTek. He was a Stationary engineer. He worked at the county hospital, so temps had to be right on when they did use them. He said yes, if measured from say two feet and then the same thing but at 10 feet, it would read slightly different, but almost unmeasurable.
Probably the cheaper they are the more the difference would be.

NO Temp gun measures water accurately, the Lazer is refracted by the water itself. ALL Temp guns have a distance they are to used from, anything outside that will promote inaccuracy. Most guns come with a distance diagram on them letting you know the 'Spread' at different distances. NO Temp gun should be used at a distance less than 4 inches, most are to used at a 8 inch distance. I can not find any info though on this model.
TIP: The further away you are the wider the circle of measurement will be. Never put a temp gum closer than 4-6 inches, you will NOT be getting an accurate measurement. When measuring water a Temp Probe is what should be used, such as some Multi Meters come with. Using light (or Lazer) in or through water is very inaccurate.

The laser is just for aiming, it uses infrared to measure temperature. The distance ratio (guide) is in the name, 12:1. It measures a 1" area at a distance of 12 inches.

FWIW;

Be careful not to place too much trust in one of these till you check it by comparing to other devices like your home tstat or your weather station. I build engines as a hobby and so I have three of these all bought from different places over the years and all 3 give different readings, by TEN degrees @ 75F!!
