In this publication, the authors study fossil material obtained from areas of the Aldabra atoll in 1987 and compare same to other fossil material. The article is mostly about avian fossilized remains. They indicate fossilized evidenced suggests the Aldabra tortoises have repopulated the atolls on at least three ocassions after the Aldabra atoll have been submerged (current elevation 8 meters with tidal variation of 2.74 m). It is speculated the tortoises probably floated from Madagaster some 264 miles to the Southeast. They may also have floated to the Aldabra atoll from Assumption island (closer) if present on Assumption at that time. There is discussion of the vegatation including Tortoise Turf.
