Hi, I have a horsefield tortoise. I've noticed that his beak has cracked today, it has done once before in the past and been fine. But this time it seems to be quite a large crack. His beak is a bit overgrown but as hes quite small and is very frantic I don't like doing it myself. Is this ok and do you have any advice? 20190724_161508.jpg 20190724_161503.jpg

Thanks

Joe

Hi, Joe:

He may seem "quite small" to you, but he's not all that young. Until you get that beak filed or clipped down to where it's supposed to be it's going to continue to split or break off. The edges of the beak are like your fingernails, and like your nails when it splits up into the 'quick' it's pretty painful. This could cause him to stop eating. You need to get that looked after as soon as you can.

Thanks. I will get him booked into the vet asap. I'll make sure I put in more effort and persist to keep his beak trimmed.

Thanks again

Joe
