On the way home from Alabama last week I saw what appeared to be a dead box turtle on it's back roughly 15 feet off the road. I immediately assumed it was dead considering it was on it's back and it's roughly 100000 degrees but I quickly realized that a dead turtle would have swollen up exposing its limbs. So I slowed down from doing 80mph and pulled over, backed up nearly half a mile to the spot figuring it would probably just be an empty shell.
Well behold she was still alive though not moving and her wounds appeared to have been a few days old because there wasn't any blood. She was covered with various insects who were all over her wounds so I rinsed her with bottle water and put her in an inch of water proceeding home just hoping it wasn't to late for her.
She didn't move at all until two hours later when we were back in Louisiana. Because her shell wounds weren't fresh enough to "heal" back together I decided to keep her in a few inches in water for a few days to keep her wounds clean and monitor her.
To make long story short she seems to be just fine and is enjoying some freedom and fresh bread lol. I hope she turns out ok for the long haul. She gets around just fine and is feeding well.
I honestly think she was on her back for days in that crazy summer heat before I picked her up!
