This is..

DSC003342.jpg

commonly known as Rose of Sharon.. cold tolerable to -20F.. look familiar?

Tomato leaves are toxic to all tortoises.. the fruit is also very high in acid and makes for runny poop!

Those indeed are Rose of Sharon, Hibiscus your Russians can eat the flowers and leaves very nutritious. Fig leaves and the fruit are fine also but again all that sugar in the figs can give them the runs. No tomato leaves and no citrus fruit or leaves.

Oh, I forgot only feed if you do not use chemicals like ferilizer or pestisides on these plants. If you do you need to stop for a minimum of three months or more before she can eat them.

This is from the USDA http://plants.usda.gov/java/profile?symbol=HISY regarding the Rose of Sharon:

Kingdom Plantae – Plants
Subkingdom Tracheobionta – Vascular plants
Superdivision Spermatophyta – Seed plants
Division Magnoliophyta – Flowering plants
Class Magnoliopsida – Dicotyledons
Subclass Dilleniidae
Order Malvales
Family Malvaceae – Mallow family
Genus Hibiscus L. – rosemallow
Species Hibiscus syriacus L. – rose of Sharon

It is in the Hibiscus family. I have these bordering my large backyard. I have fed them on a regular basis to my adult Leopard tortoise and have had no ill effects. What "white powdery stuff" on the leaves? Other than aphids or some other bug, I'm not sure what this means since I do not see that on mine.

I bought one. It was sold as ornamental mallow. Not a true hibiscus, but my tortoises like it.
