How much should a tortoise sleep, we collected Bob last night, he is a year old, he was very lively and ate, this morning we have woken him up, turned his light on and put him under it, he has had some cos lettuce and now wanting to go back to bed, is this normal!

Hi @Alibell and a very warm welcome to the forum. :tort:

Any pics of your tort and his/her enclosure? They would enable us to give you advise much more easily. ;)

Where do you live and what's the weather like nowadays?

Please read the so-called "Beginners Mistakes" Thread.

Hello, and a very warm welcome to Tortoise Forum to you and Bob. :)
Young ones do sleep a great deal, less as they get older.
But my guess is that he is just getting used to his enclosure in which case, as long as you've got your set up right, is perfectly normal.
In fact it's good he's eating, though you may find he'll stop for a bit, as he gets used to his new home.
He is afraid he may be in another's territory, that there may be predators about or that you may eat him.
Once he settles in and realizes you are the food god and that this is his safe area, he will be fine.
