Hi!

I’m brand new to the Forum and new to owning a Sulcata tortoise hatchling. I did quite a bit of research before buying a tortoise and have been following this forum for a little while now.

I know ideally my tortoise should be eating various grasses and weeds. I’m trying to introduce Mazuri tortoise pellets. So for he/she will only eat spring mix (what he was started on at the reptile store). I can’t get he/she to eat anything else. Any tricks for introducing new food?

I’m not sure how old he/she is. They told me he was roughly 5 months old. He’s about 6 inches from top of shell to the back of shell.

Thanks!

Hello and welcome!
You might find some helpful information in these caresheets..

My tortoises used to be picky eaters and I chopped up the food I wanted them to eat and chopped up the food they liked and mixed it together. You can start with a mix that is heavy on the spring mix and slowly reduce that while increasing the amount of good nutritious stuff like broad leaf weeds.

Can you post pics of your little tort? And set up? It's fun to see the pics!

Hi Katie, and welcome!

Go ahead and feed the Spring mix, but each day add a little of what you want to switch to, chopped up real small and mixed in. If you wet the salad, the new, smaller pieces will stick and he won't be able to pick them out. Take a long time - weeks - to slowly add more of the new stuff and less of the spring mix.
