What are the benefits of grazing. It seems like it takes much longer time for it to get full this way rather than just eating from the plate. Does it stimulate any natural behavior or help certain muscles?
Just wondering :p

thanks

It's natural.
They can feed on more variety.
Beak trimming.
Jaw and neck muscle strength.
...this among other reasons.

Variety. Variety. Variety.
Also, they get their exercise walking around grazing.

Is this referred to sulcatas as well? I know variety is key. But in my outside area I have grass, grazing tortoise mix, and Russian mix. Should I be adding more variety? I throw in mazuri 2x a week and cactus every other week.

Grazing is natural. That's what they are suppose to do. It's very unnatural for us to hand them food on a plate. Excersice, building muscle, variety, etc, etc, etc,. Yes, it is best for every tortoise, every species, every time possible. I still feed mine in the morning then i put him outside to graze.

Yes, variety is very important to sulcatas. Looks like you have a great variety already. The grazing tortoise and Russian tortoise seeds mixes provide over a dozen different weeds and grasses and the cactus is a great source of calcium and fiber. I think your sulcatas will live a long, happy life on the diet that you're providing.
