Best distance from basking dock?

What would be the ideal distance between the light and basking dock? I'm just nervous of having it too close but I see that the lights at the pet stores usually hang quite low. Any thoughts?

If you're talking about a mercury vapor bulb, then there is usually a minimum distance shown on the box the light came in. I wouldn't have it any closer than 12", but you have to use a temperature measuring device and see what temp shows on the dock. If it's too hot, you raise the light, if not hot enough lower the light. You want it close to 100F.

Okay, great thank you. I'll put a thermometer on the dock and figure it out right now.
