My Russian tortoise will go over to her basking spot and dig in the corner, I know digging is just an instinct, but could it be due to temperature or humidity? The temperature on the warm side is 85* and the humidity in general stays in the higher 30's to low 40's. Could she be burrowing from too low of humidity? Or just instinct?

I think they just like to burrow....I've noticed that mine does the same thing...she picks a spot she likes and burrows there until I change her enclosure around. Right now she's burrowing near her basking spot. Is your baby active during parts of the day? or just always burrowed in?

She is very active I am sure when I get home, she paces, so I feed her and take her for her daily walk, but when I am gone I am pretty sure she just basks. But she does come out of her hiding area.

Digging in is also their way of creating their own little micro climate.

If your tortoise basks all day, you might need to warm things up a little.
