I have a Horsefield, just over a year old, some people can’t define an answer to me but can they eat normal garden grass?

Yes they can, and some of them occasionally will, but they are not typically grass eaters. Broadleaf weeds of the right types should be the bulk of their diet.

Hello and welcome to TFO from Kent, UK

Have you read the care sheets for Horsfields (aka Russians) on here? They're written by species experts working hard to correct the outdated information widely available on the internet and from pet stores and, sadly, from some breeders and vets too.

Beginner Mistakes

As I see you are in Helensburgh, I am assuming it is the British town and it is likely your tort is a baby so this care sheet would be a good start
https://tortoiseforum.org/threads/b...or-other-herbivorous-tortoise-species.107734/

And this is the fully comprehensive Russian Care Sheet

My Russians actually enjoys a little fresh grass. I don’t feed it but I happened to pick some when I was picking dandelion leaves and I left it and he ate it, he actually ate the grass before anything else.
As said above weeds are best but if your tort enjoys a little grass I’m sure it’s fine.

Mine used to eat it too, but it always seem to pass through them undigested.

Much the same with Joe (a Greek). He ate quite a lot of grass as he grazed weeds from the lawn and his poop was full of it. It's good roughage (dietary fibre) if nothing else!
