I agree it looks like privet, it'd be good to see some flower/fruit or the whole plant, not just cut foliage. Think of those teaser images of the close-up of an animal eye and people asking others to guess the species. A whole plant image is much more conducive to sorting out what it is.

Thanks guys, my mom brought some in for the torts. Good thing I asked for help here before. I'll toss it out

I would like to see a pic of the whole plant, but my first impression is Syzygzium. It's a common plant with an edible fruit. If it is that, it's not dangerously toxic.
Privet is not good.
