We have a 40plus yr old male desert tortoise and a 30 yr old female. Have had them both since the female was a hatchling. We also have (8) 1 yr old hatchlings, a 1 week old and 2 day old twins hatched from 1 egg and both joined to the sac. Anyone have experience handling "twins"?

Is the yolk sac absorbing? I think when its all absorbed you SHOULD have two separate babies.

The sac absorbed quickly but there is still a umbilical like connection.

You need to tie them off.. you can use non flavoured dental floss... if all the yolk has absorbed i would tie two bits off with a small gap inbetween... tie them tight then cut where the gap is...

If tortoises have an umbilical cord, and it has to be tied off, then it falls off....
where is their belly button?

Unless there were 2 seperate yolks in the egg, than yes all twins are joined together. They both feed off the same yolk sack, so will be joined by that.
Kelly has given excellent advice to seperate the 2 hatchlings. :)

Thanks for the help. We tied off each end of the cord and then cut the cord. Before starting i cooled them off in the refrigerator to slow them down. Everything looks good, no bleeding and they are running all over their enclosure and eating like nothing ever happened.

The twins are doing great. Chasing their big sister (2 wks old) all over the place. They seem so small compared to her. She (rachel) is 2-1/8 in x 1-3/4 in and very lite color. The twins ( no names yet) are 1-1/2 x 1-1/4 in. and dark colored. The remaining cord with the string attached fell off this morning. So far so good.
