I haven't been able to find a straight answer on how often substrate should be changed, so I wanted to get your guys opinion?

If you spot clean then substrate can last last a very long time without needing to be changed. How often to change it is a personal decision.

That's pretty much what I do. I spot clean it then every now and then I change it all.

I use either orchid bark or cypress mulch. If I see clumps of pee or bits of poop, I pick them out. Otherwise I use the same substrate for a whole season.
