Katie and Dan you are both right! Katie got the common name and Dan got the latin familly name.
It say there are 24 species within the genus and I can't figure out exactly which one I've got. The leaf structure is right for the California Manroot, but the fruit is not. The fruit is the right shape for the oregon manroot, but the leaf shape is not.
In any case it says on one site, that the leaves are sometimes used as vegetables. The tubers are used to make soaps and no mention of whether the fruit is edible.
