I have no idea why, but for some reason in northern NJ, it is impossible to find any place that carries bulk cypress mulch (2-3 cuft) not lowes, home depot, walmart, none of them have it in store....Buying it at petco is the only local option, which IMO isnt really an option, i prefer not being robbed. I found a few listed on amazon, but im not familiar at all with which is a good brand. Can someone maybe tell me which of these i found is ok and safe for my tortoise? Thanks for helping ;)

It has never been available at Lowe's or Home Depot here in the southwest either. Until a few years ago, the only option we had was small, extremely over priced bags at Petco/Petsmart too. FINALLY, a couple reptile specialty stores started stocking it.

It is still much more expensive than it it is some parts of the U.S., but $15-$20 for a 2 cu. ft. bag is fairly reasonable. Have you checked for reptile specific pet shops in your area?

If you truly don't have any available, it is possible to get it for a similar total cost online. You just have to make sure you know the total cost including shipping. It really doesn't matter which brand you try first. All of them will work fine. the things you need to watch for are the coarseness of the product (personal preference), and how "clean" it is. By that I mean, it is not uncommon for cypress mulch to come with "bugs" in it. Almost all of these are harmless to torts, but still not something most people want in their substrate.

It's heavy and hauling it across the country wouldn't be very economical, when there are other options available cheaper. It's the same with topsoil and compost. They are usually sourced as locally as possible.
