Hi!
I recently added a small (about 3-inches long) diamondback terrapin to my outdoor pond in Phoenix, AZ. Since we've had him (3 months) I have not seen him basking out of the water in the sun regularly. There are several areas where he can climb out of the water and onto (a floating dock, and several pond lily leaf areas), but he never climbs out. Unless he's doing it when we're not watching, but we haven't seen him do it except for one time when he was floating along on some water lettuce.
I notice him getting some green algae on his shell, which I brush off gently with a soft toothbrush once in a while.
He is amazingly hale and hearty. He comes out when he sees us and swims right up to us for his food, which we sometimes hand-feed him because the fish take it otherwise.
I've attached a photo of him (her?).
Is this normal?
Thanks in advance!
Hector
