These plants have been popping up. They smell a little funky. I am not sure if they are native or from the russian tortoise seed mix I bought. The russian tortoises ate some.

Thanks

Norman

Norman, it kinda looks like a wild sunflower. It looks like what I see here in AZ next to the farm fields a lot.

There are a lot of different wild sunflowers (maybe 40 or more) so they may not look exactly the same.

If it is, it would not be good for your torts.

If you can keep them away from it and wait to see if you get any flowers, you may be able to know for sure.

Thanks Keith!

I will pluck the plants out from the pens, but I will let the flowers bloom on the plants in the alfalfa gardens.

I think it came from the broad-leaf seed mixture. I had it too when I planted that mixture. I thought it was chia, but I may be wrong. If you send the picture to Joe at carolinapetsupplycom he'll be able to tell you for sure.

Thanks Yvonne

I was thinking it was something from that mix.

A big tortoise breeder told me he didnt think it was a wild sunflower.

Is it something that the tortoises can eat?

It is edible for humans. It has a funky smell and the tortoises arent crazy about it. The russians ate a little bit one day, but none today.
