Now THAT'S a safe way for a tiny indoor tortoise to have an excursion outside. Go ahead and be distracted. You know when you go back to him he's going to be there! Good job!

I would lay a piece of wood across an edge to provide a bit more shade.

Throw a towel or wood on top over the hide side. You would be surprised how hot it gets in direct sun for a tiny little guy. Having shade over the hide will prevent the hide from getting hot inside (greenhouse effect) giving the tortoise a cool area to run too.
