Experience a close call of the wild at Knoxville Zoo

KNOXVILLE — Knoxville Zoo is changing the way visitors experience the zoo this summer; guests of all ages can answer the call of the wild and get an up-close introduction to some of the zoo’s most thrilling residents.

Debuting this summer is Animal Encounter Village, the place where the animals are in your face. The zoo’s newest addition features daily animal shows and the chance to come face-to-face with some of the zoo’s friendly animal ambassadors. In Animal Encounter Village, visitors may have the chance to sidle up to a snake, look a bird of prey in the eye, or get chummy with a chinchilla, to name a few. Kid-friendly shows take place throughout the day, and there’s always a chance to touch an animal or a learn a “biofact” during the interactive program.

For visitors who want to get off the beaten path to meet elephants, giraffes, penguins, or giant Aldabra tortoises, the zoo has brought back the wildly popular Close Encounters of the Wild Kind. This program gives visitors the chance to take an intimate behind-the-scenes tour to meet some high-profile zoo residents, talk with their keepers and take a souvenir photo of their very personal introduction.

Close Encounters of the Wild Kind reservations are available now through Sept. 4. Each Close Encounter session is $20 per person and sessions are limited to 10 people. A special Saturday package that includes three animal encounters is offered for $50 per person.

Reservations are highly recommended and can be scheduled by calling the zoo’s ticket office at (865) 637-5331, extension 361 or online at www.knoxville-zoo.org. (General admission to Knoxville Zoo is not included in the price of each Close Encounter ticket.)

Wee Play Zoo, Knoxville Zoo’s unique indoor play area that lets kids run their own zoo, has been revamped with new additions and activities and returns by popular demand as one of the zoo’s most popular exhibits. New this year are the Kids Stage and Puppet Theatre, where aspiring entertainers can put on their very own animal show, the Play Wee Market, a pretend souvenir shop for junior entrepreneurs, and the Infant Crawl, a special sensory garden for infants and young toddlers.

Knoxville Zoo is the city’s largest year-round attraction. Located off exit 392A from Interstate 40, the zoo is open every day except Christmas. Knoxville Zoo is nationally accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and is committed to the highest standards in animal care and well-being, ethics, conservation, and education.

Currently, the zoo is open daily from 9:30 a.m. until 6 p.m. Admission and ticket sales stop one-hour before the zoo closes. Next-day admission is free after 3 p.m. For more information, please call 865) 637-5331 ext. 300 or visit www.knoxville-zoo.org.
