Hello,
I have 2 female spur thighed tortoises (almost certain they are females!!), they are 4 years old and within the last couple of months one of them has been 'ramming' and trying to mate with the other one.
She only does it when they are out of their indoor enclosure.
Is this normal? Does anybody else's do this? What should we do? Should we leave them or seperate them when out of their enclosure?
We thought the ramming was a sign of dominance until the mating bit started!
Thank you in advance for your help
Hannah

The ramming and 'mating' is territorial.

Greeks are solitary creatures that don't need, want or particularly like a friend. Another tort is competition for space and food.

You must separate these two completely before things get any worse. If they are not separated, the subordinate tort will become sick and could die. It will be a permanent arrangement.

Tortoises should not be housed as pairs. The sexes don't matter. Yours need to be separated ASAP.

Also, they shouldn't be "out" of their enclosure. Tortoises need to be in a safe area that is designed, built and maintained for them, both indoors and out. They shouldn't be running loose in a house or yard. This is a recipe for disaster.

Sometimes when a female is ready to be bred or ready to lay eggs, she exhibits this mounting type behaviour.

Adults or close to adult don't need daily soaking. Hatchlings and upto around two years should have daily soaks. After that it can be cut back to around 3-4 times a week and then once a month or less for adults.
