I've got something similar filtering my outdoors above ground fish ponds.
They each have a 600 gph Becket pump in a mesh bag (to protect the impellers) inside the ponds pushing water up into a ten gallon tote and gravity returning into the ponds.
It's important to place a 2nd return a few inches above the primary one. So the water won't overflow if there is a clog.
I no longer use the foam that are in the photos. They get packed with silt too easily.

48hre of filtration and it's mostly clear again. That was some nasty water, wish I had tested the filter I bought before they arrived.

Thank you again for the design.

I now have the buckets sitting above the waterland tubs, so if they do overflow or leak it won't matter

Pretty much ya. You'll want a small space at the bottom of the container where the water flows in with no media where the debris will collect. A laundry basket worked for me. Then you just fill the container with media. I've got lava rock, scrub brushes, ceramic rings, and filter floss in mine.
Filter worked too good lol. I bought a bunch of mosquito fish, acclimated them, released them, and then within hours they were all eaten .... by the filter. Whoops
