I finally found a decent size cactus!! My question is,, what kind of substrate should I use, because I need to replace the soil. It has fertilizer in it now. Do I mix soil with sand? I will let the cactus grow for a few months before using it as well. Thanks in advance.[SMILING FACE WITH OPEN MOUTH AND SMILING EYES]

That actually sell cactus soil, maybe see what's in that and try to mix your own. I know they have to have really good drainage type soil. Be sure not to water them much at all, specially in a container. Mine last year did better in the ground then the ones I have in containers this year. Next year I will plant them in the ground and pull them up for winter.

I do need to keep it in a pot. It gets very cold here, so I need to be able to bring it indoors. I just picked it up today, and it's already feeling a little chilly out. So I left it indoors for now. Near a window. I have cactus soil already for my other cactus( not edible) . But I believe it does have fertilizer in it. I'm just very excited right now that I finally found one.!! I plan on buying pots to change as it grows. Are they a slow grower? , thanks Wellington.

Oops,,, just noticed you mentioned you pull them out for winter as well! I will try that! Thank you .

Good purchase: You have 3 plants! You can get organic cactus soil @ Walmart. They also have pots especially designed for succulents, with space between the bottom and the water plate.

Are you transplanting it because of the fertiliser? You might want to call a nursery specialised in succulents, but I've always been told to never do a total soil replacement when transplanting anything. So you might not be able to get rid of all the fertilised soil.

I have one potted also in the house. That one does good. The ones I have potted that I left outside all summer is not doing good. The ones I planted last year in the ground did really good. I think if you want to plant them in a pot and leave them out when it is summer time, you need to move them out of the rain. Too much rain for being in a pot. If in the ground, the roots don't sit in wet soil as long as in a pot.
So, my advice for now if it's getting cold where you are is to keep them inside in a sunny window. Next year, plant it outside in the ground and bring in when it gets cold again.
Now, if you don't get lots of snow and have sun in your yard all winter, there are cold hardy cactus that you can plant in the ground and leave them there. That's the kind I had last year. The only problem, I don't have sun in my yard all winter, so they never got to dry out:(
One more thing to help confuse you if I haven't already:D. You can easily start more plants by taking a cactus pad, I cut the end off where the pad was attached and then plant that end into soil. It will grow new pads.
Oh, you can also always find pads for sale at tortoisesupply.com, ebay, amazon or fauna and many other places too. You can grow more pads out of those pads too:D
Hope I didn't just give you cactus overload:p :D

Hi! Thank you! I was going to transplant for fertilizer being the main reason. I would also like a nicer pot![SMILING FACE WITH OPEN MOUTH AND SMILING EYES]i noticed the one pad just stuck in the soil. It will grow like that? Kind of like my jade plant.... It would be nice if it flowers!
